South Boston Speedway News
Tight chase for Late Model Stock Car Division point lead will resume Saturday night at SoBo
Jul 11, 2006 - updated Jul 11th, 2006 12:58pm
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, VA. --

It can't get much tighter atop the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division point standings at South Boston Speedway.

When the green flag falls for the start of the Embarq 150 presented by BOB FM NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series race program on Saturday, July 15, at South Boston Speedway, the top four drivers in the chase for the Late Model Stock Car crown will be separated by a total of 14 points.

Owen Miller and Jonathan Cash are currently deadlocked atop the Late Model Stock Car point standings. Neither driver has visited Victory Lane this season at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval, but both have turned in the most consistent finishes of the campaign.

Neither Miller of Cash can rest easy, however, when the Late Model Stock Cars wage battle Saturday night in the featured attraction of the Embarq 150 presented by BOB FM, which will get underway at 7 p.m.

Lurking just 12 points behind the first-place tie is teen driver Drew Herring, who has claimed three straight victories and has posted wins in five of the last six Late Model Stock Car Division races.

Herring, who got off to a slow start in 2006, is now up to third in the point standings and is just 12 points behind the first-place tie. Herring is only two points ahead of fourth-place Jon Denning, who has claimed a pair of wins this season at America's Hometown Track.

Those drivers and many more of the top Late Model Stock Car competitors in the region are expected to be on hand for the running of the Embarq 150 presented by BOB FM.

Speedway officials have placed a $500 bounty on Herring on the heels of his third straight victory. Any driver that can beat Herring to the checkered flag will collect a $500 bonus in addition to the regular winner's share of the purse.

Also featured for racing action Saturday night will be the Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman Division drivers in twin 50-lap races. In addition, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division competitors and the touring Legendary Flathead drivers will hit the asphalt for action as well.

Bruce Anderson, a seven-time winner at South Boston Speedway this season, leads the chase for the division championship over second-place Tommy Peregoy and Danny Willis, Jr., who occupies the third-place position. Chuck Watkins is the point leader in the Pure Stock Division, while Quain Moore sits in second and Lee Anderson owns third place.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:15 p.m.

Adult admission for the race will be $8 up to 6:30 p.m. and $10 after that. Youth, ages 10-15, will be admitted for $5 and children under the age of 10 will be admitted free with a paid adult.
