Tight Late Model points tussle

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway - Update: Wednesday, July 5, 2006

A four-race, 200-lap program is slated for this Saturday, July 8, as Langley Speedway continues its 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series campaign.
This week’s feature lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models (75 laps); NTELOS Wireless Super Streets (50 laps); Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends (25 laps); and, the Rolling Thunder Modified tour (50 laps).
Gates open at 12 noon and practice gets under way at 1:30 p.m. Qualifying begins at 4, while pre-race festivities start at 6:30. The first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, there is no charge for military members in uniform. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.

Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, July 6. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and practice runs from 5 ‘til dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch practice rounds from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday night practice sessions are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week's session.

The Late Model division will reach the unofficial midway point of its schedule on Saturday and a fierce, three-way battle is shaping up for the ‘06 title. Greg Edwards and Danny Edwards have both accumulated 452 points to lead the way. Greg enjoys the slightest of edges over his older brother with two race wins to Danny’s one. Mark Wertz, last week’s winner, trails the Edwardses by only two points. Jeff Shiflett ranks fourth in the current standings, 34 points behind Wertz.
• • •
Tommy Sweeney will be shooting for his third victory in this week’s Super Street race. With 242 points, he leads the division standings by six over Dale Parro and eight over Ritchie German. While Sweeney and German have posted two wins apiece, Parro is still looking for his first checkered flag.
• • •
Ricky Derrick is tied with Sean Calway for sixth in the Super Street standings, but that ranking doesn’t tell the whole story of his season. Through five races, he has posted one victory and has fallen out of three other events while leading. In the other race, he was running second when he spun in Turn 4 and dropped a lap behind the leaders. With a little better luck, he could be undefeated!
• • •
Cameron Patrick will be looking for his third win in the INEX Legends 25-lapper. He holds an 18-point advantage over Jeremy Cook in the points rundown, 242-224. Meanwhile, only 12 points separate Cook, Ryan Crites (220), Don McLaughlin (220) and Kerry Gilbert (212).
• • •
The Rolling Thunder Modifieds will be making their second, and final, appearance of the season at Langley on Saturday. Thomas Stinson was the winner in the tour’s first stop on May 13. The series has been idle since June 10 when Craig Oliver won at Old Dominion Speedway.
• • •
Seaford Baptist Church, at 1311 Seaford Road in Seaford, Va., will be hosting “NASCAR Sunday” on July 9. The event gets under way at 1 p.m. with a car/truck show in the parking lot. Several Langley Speedway machines will also be on display. Beginning at 2, a worship service will be held in the church gymnasium, followed, at 3:30, by the USG Sheetrock 400 NASCAR Nextel Cup race, which will be shown on a big-screen TV.
• • •
Rained out on July 5, Langley Speedway’s “Extreme Sports Wednesday” program resumes on July 12. The lineup features “1-on-1 Drags,” “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock) and a “Burnout Competition.”
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Pit admission is $15 and general admission grandstand tickets are $8. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, July 15, with Allstate Night at the Races. That evening’s lineup includes: Late Models, Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks, Verizon Super Trucks, E-Z Auto Rental UCARs and BBFlabradors.com Wolf Trucks.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
