South Boston, VA. --

Drew Herring of Benson, N.C. has been as hot as the weather at South Boston Speedway in recent weeks.

Monday night, Herring started on the outside of the front row, swiped the lead from pole position winner Frank Deiny, Jr. of Mechanicsville, Va. on the opening circuit and led the rest of the way to score a victory in the 200-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division. The event was the featured attraction of the Bailey's 200 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series program.

A crowd of over 10,000 was on hand to see Herring win his third straight race before the skies lit up with South Boston Speedway's annual fireworks extravaganza. The victory was also Herring's fifth in the last six Late Model Stock Car races at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

Among those in attendance Monday night at America's Hometown Track was NASCAR Nextel Cup star Denny Hamlin, who is a former Late Model Stock Car competitor at South Boston.

Herring and Deiny, who motored to a runner-up finish, were so dominant in the race that only three cars remained on the lead lap when the checkered flag fell.

The 200-lapper was slowed by just three cautions, the last of which occurred prior to the midpoint of the race. When the green flag waved on lap 74 for a restart, it remained in place over the remainder of the event.

Cliff Daniels of Smithfield, Va., who started eighth in the field after competing in the 100-lap Limited Sportsman Division race, motored to a third-place finish as the final driver on the lead lap.

Tony McGuire of Roanoke, Va. placed fourth at the close of the race, while Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. rounded out the top five drivers in the 28-car field. McGuire and Smith were each one lap down at the end.

Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C. posted a sixth-place run in the race, while Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C, who started from the 20th slot, secured a seventh-place finish.

Owen Miller of Emporia, Va. was eighth at the close of the race, while Jamey Caudill of Four Oaks, N.C. was ninth and Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. rounded out the top 10 competitors. Cash, Cook, Miller, Caudill and Ramsey were all one lap down at the close of the race.

Bruce Anderson takes advantage of late-race caution to score seventh Limited Sportsman Division win of year

Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. didn't lead but one lap of the 100-lap Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman Division race Monday night. That one lap, however, was the most important one.

Anderson edged pole position winner Justin Snow of Danville, Va. across the start-finish line on the 100th circuit of the race. Snow had led the opening 99 laps of the race, but was unable to hold off Anderson in a two-lap shootout to the checkered flag, which followed the race's second and final caution period. The yellow flag flew on lap 94 when debris was reported on the backstretch.

Danny Willis of Cluster Springs, Va. placed third in the 14-car field after qualifying in the fifth slot. Cliff Daniels of Smithfield, Va. roared from the 11th starting position to finish in fourth place, while Brian Pembleton of Amelia, Va. rounded out the top five drivers in the race.

The race was slowed by only two cautions, both of which took place for reports of debris.

With the victory, Anderson maintained his lead in the division's championship chase. Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. is second in the standings and is followed by Willis.

Jeff Wilson scores second Pure Stock Division victory in 75-lap shootout

Jeff Wilson of Durham, N.C. isn't running a full schedule at South Boston Speedway this season, but he is making the most of his appearances at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

Wilson roared to his second victory of the season in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division. The win came in a 75-lap race, which is the longest race of the campaign for the division.

Wilson set the fast qualifying time for the event, but had to start from the eighth position following a pre-race inversion. Wilson grabbed the lead in the race by the 21st circuit when he worked his way around Joey Conner of Halifax, Va.

Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C., the points leader for the division, started sixth in the race, avoided an early accident that took place just in front of him, and surged to a runner-up finish.

Quain Moore of Callands, Va., the second-place driver in the title chase, grabbed a third-place run in the 17-car field and was followed in the top five by Lee Anderson of Gladys, Va. in the fourth-place position and Keith Langston of Pittsboro, N.C. in the fifth-place slot.
