Racing & Fireworks on tap for Miss Utility Night on July 1 Wednesday
Jun 28, 2006 - updated Jun 28th, 2006 10:54pm
Web posted by Gary Daughtrey

Hampton, VA --

Update: June 28, 2006

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway

Langley Speedway gets a head start on the Independence Day holiday this Saturday, July 1, as the track continues its 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series campaign with Miss Utility Night at the Races.

Saturday’s feature lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks (40 laps); Verizon Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Gates open at 12 noon. Practice begins at 1:30 p.m. and time trials start at 4. Pre-race activities, highlighted by the Champ Kart race, commence at 6:30 and the evening’s racing program starts at 7.
In addition to the on-track action, fans at Saturday’s event will be treated to a fireworks display. The fireworks are scheduled to launch prior to the Late Model feature, the final race of the evening.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, there is no charge for military members in uniform. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.

Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, June 29. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and practice runs from 5 ‘til dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch practice rounds from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday night practice sessions are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week's session.

With a third-place run in last weekend’s Late Model race, Danny Edwards edged ahead of his brother, Greg Edwards, to become the new leader in the division points rundown — 406-404. Mark Wertz is only six points behind the leader, at 400. Despite pacing the division with four race wins, fourth-place Casey Wyatt finds himself 20 points behind Danny Edwards, at 386, the result of two subpar outings in the opening weeks of the season.
• • •
Ricky Derrick will be gunning for his fourth victory of the season in Saturday’s Grand Stock race. He saw his three-race winning streak come to an end, at the hands of ‘05 division champ Dean Shiflett, in the June 17 feature.
Derrick, who is competing in both the Grand Stock and Super Street classes this year, has led at least one lap in eight of the 10 races he has run at Langley in ‘06. Last weekend, he set a new qualifying mark in Super Street time trials, matching his record-setting Grand Stock run from earlier in the season.
• • •
Carl Livingston will try for his third straight win in this week’s Super Truck feature. He enjoys a 20-point advantage over Justin Ballo in the standings, 242-222, and has started the season with five consecutive top-three finishes.
• • •
The UCAR class will wrap up three straight weeks of racing on Saturday. The class will be off on July 8, then return to action on July 15. Four-time race winner Randy Prillaman holds a 14-point lead over Robbie Davis in the title chase, 274-260.
• • •
Langley Speedway’s “Extreme Sports Wednesday” program resumes on July 5. The lineup features “1-on-1 Drags,” “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock) and a “Burnout Competition.”
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Pit admission is $15 and general admission grandstand tickets are $8. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.
• • •
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, July 8, with 200 laps of feature racing. That evening’s lineup includes: Late Models, NTELOS Wireless Super Streets, Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends and the Rolling Thunder Modified tour.
• • •
A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
To learn more about Langley Speedway and its schedule of upcoming events, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or visit the track’s Web site — www.langley-speedway.com.
