McFarland Fades Late In Kentucky

Sparta, Ky. --

(June 18, 2006)
The Navy Accelerate Your Life No. 88 NASCAR Busch Series Chevrolet owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and driven by series rookie, Mark McFarland, struggled to get a handle on the unique Kentucky Speedway racetrack in Saturday’s Meijer 300.

After the race McFarland unbuckled from the race car frustrated and exhausted.

“We just never figured it out here tonight,” he said. “The car would get better on long runs but I never really felt comfortable.”

The team ran as high as 17th during the event, but faded late in the race and fell to 26th at the checkered flag.

Securing the 40th qualifying position didn’t give the team much reason to feel confident prior to the wave of the green flag.

“Well, where do you want me to start?” said an aggravated Crew Chief, Rich Hubbs, following the event. “We obviously failed on a number of levels tonight: qualifying effort, communication and adjustments.”

When asked to identify positive aspects to the evening Hubbs paused for a moment and said, “Pit stops and the Fabrication Department at JR Motorsports.

“The Navy pit crew is gelling and the guys are busting off some consistently fast stops and the fab guys at the shop work hard to build these cars and turn them around quickly after we tear them up. They are the unseen warriors of this deal.”

The event was marred by several early cautions including one vicious accident in which the No. 34 driven by Jeff Fuller spun and made hard contact with the inside wall of the race track. Forcing NASCAR to Red Flag the event as safety workers extricated Fuller from the race car. He was later airlifted to a local hospital were he was listed in stable condition.

McFarland moved up one position in Busch Series driver standings to 20th.

Navy Racing in the Media

On Sunday, McFarland was a guest on the Speed Freaks weekly radio show and on Saturday he was a call-in guest on WGTZ 92.3’s morning show.
