South Boston Speedway News
Drew Herring pulls away from field to score 3rd Late Model Stock win of season at South Boston Speedway
Jun 18, 2006 - updated Jun 18th, 2006 1:03am
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, VA. --

The caution flag may have been Drew Herring's best friend Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

The yellow flag flew on lap 59 of the 150-lap Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division as Herring, who resides in Benson, N.C., and Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C. were waging a side-by-side battle for the lead spot on the track. That side-by-side battle, which saw Cash on the low side and Herring in the high groove had gone on for 15 circuits.

Under NASCAR rules, the race lineup for the restart of the event reverted to the last completed green flag lap. When Herring and Cash crossed the start-finish line on the 58th circuit, Herring had the lead spot by a nose. Therefore, he was placed in the lead spot for the green flag restart.

When the race went back green on lap 65, the yellow flag stayed on the shelf the rest of the way and Herring motored easily to his third triumph of the season with the aid of the long green flag run. The race was the featured attraction of the Dad's Night Out NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series race program.

Pole position winner Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J. slipped to third place in the first half of the event, but battled back past Cash on lap 131 and held on for a runner-up finish in the 22-car field.

The second-place run by Denning, coupled with a fifth-place finish by Owen Miller of Emporia, Va., who entered the night as the leader in the chase for the division point crown, enabled Denning to move atop the standings by a mere two points.

Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va. slipped past Cash with 17 laps remaining and motored to a third-place finish, while Cash settled for a fourth-place run after challenging for the lead early on. Miller placed fifth in the field and was the final driver on the lead lap when the checkered flag flew.

Jason Dickerson of Ruckersville, Va. secured a sixth-place run, while Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. placed seventh and Justin Johnson of Roxboro, N.C. was eighth in the field.

Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. was ninth for the night, while David Quackenbush of Lorton, Va. rounded out the top 10 drivers. Dickerson, Smith, Justin Johnson, Cook and Quakenbush were all one lap down at the close of the race.

Tommy Peregoy scores first victory of season in 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race

Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. started from the pole position in the 50-lap Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman Division race and led every circuit on the way to scoring his first victory of the season.

Peregoy opened a lead of as much as a straightaway over his closest competitors before the lone caution period of the race set the stage for a four-lap shootout to the checkered flag.

Five-time winner Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va., who leads Peregoy by 26 points in the chase for the division championship, started from the outside pole and challenged Peregoy over the final four circuits before settling for a runner-up finish.

Danny Willis, Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va., who started eighth in the 12-car field, held off a hard-charging Justin Snow of Danville, Va. down the stretch to score a third-place run. Snow motored home with a fifth-place finish, while Wesley Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. rounded out the top five competitors.

Scott Phillips grabs lead early in Pure Stock Division action and roars to a first-place finish

Scott Phillips of Roxboro, N.C. swiped the lead from William Ridgeway of Burlington, N.C. in the early stages of the 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock Division race and held on the rest of the way to score a triumph.

Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C., the point leader in the chase for the division championship, started seventh in the event and motored to a runner-up finish. Watkins qualified third in the 15-car field, but had to go to the middle of the pack since he had won the previous two events at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

Lee Anderson of Gladys, Va. ran second for a good portion of the race before settling for a third-place finish. Courtney Crosby of Scottsburg, Va. finished fourth in the race and Chris Crosby of Scottsburg, Va. rounded out the top five drivers.

Jeremy Cook scores victory in another action-packed INEX Legends Series event

Jeremy Cook of Hampton, Va. notched his second straight INEX Legends Series in dramatic fashion. Cook swiped the lead on the final circuit of the 25-lap race from pole position winner Cameron Patrick of Yorktown, Va.

The race featured eight lead changes between Cook and Patrick, who motored to a second-place finish.

With the victory, Cook maintained his lead in the chase for the INEX Legends Series points crown at South Boston.

Brad Arthur of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. placed third in the 11-car field and was followed in the top five by Chris Booker in fourth place and Kevin Yeatts of Powhatan, Va. in the fifth position.

Ray Ellington rolls to victory in 15-lap consolation race for Grand Stock Division

Ray Ellington of Madison Heights, Va. started second in the 15-lap consolation race for the Grand Stock Division and motored to a victory.

Anthony Sparks of Danville, Va. placed second in the race, which featured a field of only four cars.

Ellington held a sizable advantage early on, however, Sparks closed to within a car length by the end.
