Walker Arthur Picks Up Career First Late Model Win And Continues Domination In Sportsman Class
Jun 18, 2006 - updated Jun 18th, 2006 12:59am
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, VA. --

A two win night is very rare at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. To do it in two divisions and start eighth in both races is an even more difficult task. No one is ever surprised to see Walker Arthur in victory lane in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division. But on this hot, muggy Saturday night Arthur showed everyone in attendance that he is also going to be a force in the Victory Late Models as he took home his first career victory in the divisions 35 lap feature on W.C. Starling Tree Service Night. To top that off Arthur also dominated the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature to pick up his sixth win in a row and make it a two win night for the Forest, VA driver.

“I couldn’t imagine in my wildest dreams winning in two divisions on the same night, this is absolutely awesome and a great fathers day present for my father,” commented the very exhausted Arthur in victory lane.

Arthur, driving the #87 Cecil B Arthur Enterprises, PMZ, Rocket Pontiac GTO made a three wide pass for second on lap 17 on Roland Mann and Tom Cohick to take second. He then reeled in Ronald Cusic on lap 27 and used the high side once again to take the lead and go on to pick up the victory.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature it only took 3 laps for Arthur to get to the front from his eighth place starting position and make a three wide pass on Roger Jamerson and Larry Bradsher to take the lead. Arthur would pull away from the field and win by almost a half track advantage.

In other action Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA started eighth in the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature and blew by Brent Bordeaux on the outside on lap 12 to take the lead and go on to post his third win in a row. In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature seventh starting Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA took the lead from James Hawk on lap 6 and held Bob Terry off by a car length to take home the victory. In the Dixie Chopper All Americans 15 lap feature Marty Coltrain of Richmond, VA took the checkers for the first time.

In the Victory Lap Late Models current point leader Jared Powell of Charlottesville, VA set fast time and inverted the top six cars putting Neil McClanan and Ronald Cusic on the front row leading the field to green.

Cusic and won the battle into turn 1 with Tom Cohick working to his inside. Cusic beat Cohick to the line by inches to lead lap 1. Roland Mann began to put pressure on cohick for second and got inside him on lap 3 but caution would fall for a spin by Austin Hubbard in turn 2.

On the restart Cusic held a one car length advantage over Cohick, Mann, McClanan and Steve Long. On lap 7 Cohick and Mann went at each other for second in a side by side duel It wasn’t until lap 12 that Mann finally took the spot for good. On lap 13 Walker Arthur appeared into the top five using the high side with precision. On lap 17 Mann, Cohick and Arthur went three wide out of turn 2 with Arthur coming out with second. On lap 19 Cohick went back to the bottom to get past Mann out of turn 2. With five laps to go Cusic held a three car length advantage with Arthur closing quickly.

On lap 27 Arthur went to the outside of Cusic in turn 1 to take the lead. On lap 28 Cusic and Cohick got together in turn 1 battling for second bringing out caution. On the restart Arthur got a great restart and pulled Mann by two car lengths. Caution would fly one more time for a spin by Mike Latham that collected Donnie Marshall. On the final restart Arthur again got a great restart and held on to pick up his first Late Model win of his career. Rounding out the top five were Roland Mann, Jamie Lathroum, Neil McClanan and Jared Powell. Arthur also picked up the picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his victory.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Page Harrison of Jettersville, VA set fast time in hot lap qualifying and inverted the top eight. That put Donnie Medlin and Chris Moore on the front row and leading the field to green. The races first caution came in turn 2 as Medlin drifted up into Eric Erwin sending up and over the hood of Medlin.

On the restart Brian Dobie took control out of turn 2 to lead the first lap with Chucks Marks, Moore and Brent Bordeaux in tow. On lap 6 Tom Eriksen brought out the caution with a spin in turn 2 that collected Page Harrison. On lap 7 Bret Hamilton worked past Marks on the outside or third.

By lap 9 Bordeaux started to work on Dobie for the lead. Bordeaux looked inside Dobie as Hamilton looked outside Bordeaux for position. Bordeaux took the lead on lap 11 with Hamilton riding the rim on the outside. Coming out of turn 4 Hamilton took the lead from Bordeaux with Eriksen now in third.

With two to go the races final caution would fall closing the field on the bumper of Hamilton. On the restart Hamilton got a great jump on Bordeaux and the rest of the field and brought home his fifth win of the season and third in a row. Rounding out the top five were Brent Bordeaux, sixteenth starting Tom Eriksen, Brian dobie and Chuck Marks. Francis Jarrelle III picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his ninth place finish.

The start of the Truckin Thunder Sportsman race had a familiar ring as Walker Arthur of Forest, VA set fast time for the eighth straight race and started eighth for the fifth week in a row. Larry Bradsher and Davis Lipscombe led the field to green, but two quick cautions put the field single file. On the restart Davis Lipscombe went to work on Bradsher for the lead. It didn’t tke long the the heat to be turned up as on lap 1 Arthur made it three wide as he went under Roger Jamerson and Lipscombe. Jamerson came out with the lead and Arthur working his inside. Arthur never gave up and grabbed the lead in turn 1 on lap 4.

From there Arthur pulled away, never getting a challenge as he won by almost a half track advantage over Roger Jamerson. Rounding out the top five were sixteenth starting Donnie Owens, Davis Lipscombe and Larry Bradsher. Chris Stacy picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his ninth place finish.

In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature Bob Terry set fast time and inverted the top eight drivers. It didn’t take long before they were three wide. On lap 6 Davis Lipscombe went to the outside of James hawk to take the lead with Bob Terry in tow.

Terry took several shots at the lead but Lipscombe held him off each time. Terry got one more good shot when on lap 23 caution came out for a spin by Chris Tatum. Lipscombe would hold off Terry by a car length for the win. Rounding out the top five were James Hawk, Mark Wright and Tony Quade.

In the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature Marty Coltrain and Brett Adkins led the field to green. Coltrain won the drag race to turn one and led lap 1. By lap seven Dustin Oens had worked his way to third with Vernon Kirby and Stephen Childress in the top five.

On the lap 7 restart Owens took second from Adkins and set out for Coltrain. On lap 9 Coltrain had Oens looking to his inside. Owens took a couple more shots at the lead until Coltrain found the right line and went on to record the victory by two car lengths. Rounding out the top five were Dustin Owens, Vernon Kirby, Brett Adkins and Stephen Childress.
