Stafford Springs --

(Stafford Springs, CT)---Friday night, June 16th was the 16th annual TSI Harley Davidson 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway with the Busch East Series on hand, In NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action at the Connecticut half-mile, Eric Berndt was the winner of the SK Modified® feature event and took over the season points lead. In Late Model feature action, Jim Peterson ended Woody Pitkat’s three-race winning streak with his 21st career Late Model victory. Chris Matthews was the winner of the SK Light Modified feature to become the first repeat feature winner in that division, Charlie Newman scored his first career victory in the Limited Late Model feature event, and David Gambacorta came away the winner of the 15-lap DARE Stock feature event.

In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature, Eric Berndt, of Rocky Hill, found his way through a mid-race melee at the front of the pack to emerge with the lead. Once the race went back to green, Berndt slowly pulled away from the field to record a comfortable victory. Jeff Malave finished second, with Todd Owen third. Woody Pitkat was on a mission after an earlier spin and he charged through the field in the closing laps to come home fourth. Zach Sylvester rounded out the top-5. Berndt’s victory, combined with Pitkat’s fourth place finish, makes Berndt the new SK Modified® points leader heading into next Friday night’s action.

In the 30-lap Late Model feature, Jim Peterson, of Monson, MA moved to the front of the field in the early going, and after surviving several restarts, he drove away from his closest pursuers to take his first Late Model feature win of the 2006 season and end Woody Pitkat’s Late Model feature winning streak at three races. Todd Owen finished second, with Woody Pitkat, Ryan Posocco, and Scott Foster, Jr. rounding out the top-5. The victory was the 21st Late Model feature win of Peterson’s career at Stafford Motor Speedway, which places him in sole possession of second place on the all-time Late Model feature winners list. Chuck Zentarski leads all drivers with 23 wins, while Posocco and Tom Butler each have 20 career wins.

In the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature, Chris Matthews, of Stafford, took the checkered flag to become the first repeat winner in Stafford Speedway’s newest division. Matthews’ victory didn’t come easily. A late caution set up a four-lap dash to the finish. Matthews and Duke Place, a feature winner back on May 5th, battled side by side for several laps before Matthews cleared to the lead. Place then took several looks to the inside of Matthews, but came up just short at the finish. Shelly Perry passed two cars on the final lap of the race in the outside groove to finish third, with Tony Santangelo and Richie Pallai, Jr. rounding out the top-5. In the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature event, the battle for the win came down to a shoot-out between Charlie Newman and Joey Ferrigno.

The two drivers battled nose to tail for much of the 20-lap distance, and looked to be settling the win amongst themselves. But a late caution slowed the action and erased the margin that Newman and Ferrigno had built up over third place. Andrew Durand moved into second on the restart, but his car was extremely loose in the final laps and he was dirt tracking his car through the corners. The loose condition allowed George Nocera, Jr. to take over the second position, but it was Newman taking the checkered flag for his first Limited Late Model feature win. Nocera took second, with Durand, Bill Davis, and Mike Sweeney, Jr. rounding out the top-5. Ferrigno spun in turn 4 on the final lap, which erased a sure top-5 finish.

In the 15-lap DARE Stock feature, David Gambacorta took advantage of a restart situation on lap-9 to take the lead of the race, and he would lead the rest of the way from there. Bill Dunn finished second, with Tom Stirk, Vince Gambacorta, and Raymond Grassetti rounding out the top-5.
