Butch Miller Returns to Home-Town Track
Jun 14, 2006 - updated Jun 14th, 2006 5:24pm
Web posted by Press Release

Indianapolis Ind. --

Indianapolis Ind. (June 13, 2006) – Butch Miller will return to his home town track for Wednesday night’s Safety Kleen 200 ASALM Challenge Series event at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Mich. Miller will pair up with former ASA touring crew chief, Deon Deneau. The SS Racing duo has a history of wins and top finishes including a second place point’s championship in the former ASA Touring Series. Miller and Deneau teamed up earlier this year for another Challenge Series race at Nashville. They ran as high as second place before an incident occurred that ended their night.

For Miller, Berlin Raceway is the place he considers his home-town track. With a career that includes over 400 wins Berlin is the only track Miller claims to have an un-official track championship at. “I won a track championship there many years ago,” said Miller. “I don’t know if it’s on record anywhere, but I did do it.”

Miller is on record as an inductee into the state of Michigan’s Motor Sports Hall of Fame. Returning to a short track that derives from his early routes is a combination he feels sets the stage for a successful event.

“I think we’re going to win or finish 15th,” said Miller, who estimates he’s raced somewhere between 30-50 times at Berlin. “We’re going there looking for a win, but in racing it’s never easy to win. All the circumstances have to line up no matter how many times you’ve been around a particular track.”

Crew Chief Deon Deneau echo’s Butch’s thoughts on the event. “I’m confident we’ll have a well prepared race car and look to win this race or at the very least finish up front,” stated Deneau. “But the goal is to go for a win and I feel that’s a very realistic goal. It won’t be easy but that is the mark we’re aiming for.”

For the SS Racing team much of the year has been spent working with developmental drivers Leilani Munter and Andrew Weldon. Miller has been working as a crew chief/coach to Weldon and Deneau the same to Munter. Although the team understands its primary role as a development team the two are welcoming an opportunity to work together as two racing veterans.

“I enjoy working with the younger up-and-coming drivers,” said Miller. “I know my days of racing full time are very limited. And working and hopefully helping young drivers grow is a way for me to carry on my place in motorsports.”

“But a short-track race at Berlin in a late model is something I don’t think I will ever lose the desire to do,” declared Miller. “I think that’s true for many veteran drivers. And that’s why we see guys like Johnny Benson returning the grass-routes racing. It’s the most pure form of racing.”

NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers, Johnny Benson and David Stremme have both entered tomorrow nights event. Miller is currently favored over both of them in a pole on the ASALMS website. But Miller or Deneau don’t view those names as their primary competition.

“I’m not worried about those guys,” indicated Miller. “I’m more concerned with series regulars and guys like Eddie Hoffman. But I don’t typically worry about competition anyway. The goal is to go out there and be the first one to cross the finish line. It doesn’t matter if we’re beating a guy with a famous name or a young kid; we’re going to race and do well in the race against whoever else is on the track.”

“I’m confident we can be a top team out there,” emphasized Deneau. “We just need to get the car right for Butch and then circumstances need to go our way during the race. But both Butch and I have been up against tough competition in the past. I welcome it because in the end if you win, you’ve accomplished more by beating tough drivers. And there are plenty of tough drivers out there besides the NASCAR names.”

Miller will pilot his traditional No. 52 SS Racing ASI LIMTED Chevy for the Safety Kleen 100 at Berlin Raceway, which is scheduled for a 7pm Eastern Time zone start. For further event information visit www.asalatemodels.com
