McFarland And Navy Team Salvage 22Nd-Place Finish At Nashville
Jun 12, 2006 - updated Jun 12th, 2006 3:43pm
Web posted by

Lebanon, Tenn. --

June 11, 2006 NASCAR Busch Series driver Mark McFarland and the No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life team finished 22nd in the Federated Auto Parts 300 at Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday.

The day got off to a great start as McFarland qualified his No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS in 11th position for the race with a lap of 29.921 seconds, 160.382 mph. The fast lap marked the team’s best qualifying effort of the 2006 season.

As the race got underway that evening, McFarland radioed that the car was pretty decent. Then on Lap 13, he and another car spun off of Turn 2. The rear of McFarland’s No. 88 made contact with the wall and he brought the Navy Chevrolet to the attention of his crew on pit road.

The team pitted six times under caution during the next 35 laps to repair the damage as best they could and on Lap 52 McFarland restarted the race in 31st position, still on the lead lap. Despite the damage to his car, he worked his way up to 24th place by Lap 105.

The crew continued to work on the car on subsequent pit stops and McFarland brought home a 22nd-place finish.

“The guys on our team did a great job tonight,” McFarland said. “They gave me an awesome car. The Navy Chevrolet was going to have a good finish, but I spun early in the race and took us out of contention for a top 10.

“We’re still a relatively new team. Our results over the past few weeks might not show it, but we’re definitely making progress each week.”

“The past few weeks have been rough for us, but we haven’t given up,” said Crew Chief Rich Hubbs. “We picked up our best starting spot of the year today and had a great car for the race.

“I’m confident this team will knock off some great finishes if we ever get rid of the bad luck that’s seemed to plague us lately.”

Navy Racing in the Media

On Wednesday, McFarland was a guest on WJJM 94.3’s Pitroad Country show. On Saturday, he was interviewed live following qualifying by SPEED Channel. Before the race he was interviewed live by FX. He also was a guest on WGFX 104.5 during their live broadcast from the track.
