McFarland Battles With “The Monster;” Finishes 30Th At Dover
Jun 6, 2006 - updated Jun 6th, 2006 4:42pm

Dover, Del. --

June 4, 2006 NASCAR Busch Series driver Mark McFarland and the No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life team finished 30th in the Stonebridgeracing.com 200 at Dover International Speedway on Saturday.

The weekend got off to a rough start as McFarland backed his No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS into the Turn 4 wall during the rookie practice session on Friday. The team immediately brought out the backup car and got it ready for the final practice session in 41 minutes.

Saturday’s Busch Series qualifying session was rained out, so the starting grid was determined by owners’ point standings. McFarland lined up 23rd for the race.

During the race the crew pitted on several occasions to adjust the handling of the Navy Chevrolet, each stop making the car better and better for McFarland.

He ran as high as 21st before getting caught up in a wreck on Lap 157. Contact with another car caused significant damage to the right-front of the Navy Chevrolet. The team brought the car onto pit road for several stops to repair the damage and sent McFarland back on the track to finish out the race in 30th position.

“They all just piled up there in front of me coming off of Turn 4,” McFarland said. “We were all in a pack and there wasn’t anywhere to go.

“We were able to finish this one, at least. We just can’t get the bad luck off our side. We just need to get turned around here and get some good runs. It’s tough when you’re back there in the back. You just can’t get good track position. It wasn’t a good day, but we won’t give up. We’ll keep fighting.”

“We had a good car here today,” Crew Chief Rich Hubbs said. “Our backups are just as good as our primary cars and the team did a great job getting the backup turned around in 41 minutes after the crash in practice.

“We wanted to leave Dover with a top-15 finish, but Mark had nowhere to go when the cars started wrecking in front of him. We’ve had a rough bit of luck here lately, but I’m sure we’ll get it turned around for Nashville.”

Navy Racing in the Media

On Tuesday, McFarland called in to WDSD 92.9 FM for an interview to preview his weekend at Dover. On Wednesday, he traveled to Nashville, Tenn., to participate in a one-day media tour. He was interviewed by several local television stations including, WSMV NBC TV, WTVF CBS TV, FOX 17 and WKRN ABC TV. He was a featured guest on WANT FM, WGFX FM, WWTN FM, WSIX FM, Williamson AM Radio and he was on two shows on WGFX 104.5 FM The Zone. McFarland also fielded questions from reporters from The Tennessean, The Lebanon Democrat, Middle Tennessee Racing News Magazine and Insider Racing News. On Friday, McFarland was a guest on Delmarva’s ESPN 1240 AM show that aired live from the track. On Saturday, team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. was interviewed about his Navy Racing Team by a crew from FOX for an upcoming race broadcast.
