Mcfarland Finishes 33Rd At Lowe’S Motor Speedway
May 30, 2006 - updated May 30th, 2006 12:21pm

Concord, N.C. --

May 27, 2006

NASCAR Busch Series driver Mark McFarland and the No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life team finished 33rd in the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

The No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS started the race in 36th position after running a lap of 30.220 seconds, 178.690 mph in Thursday’s qualifying session.

Initially McFarland radioed to the team that the car was too tight. On Lap 81, the team made air pressure and track bar adjustments during a pit stop under caution. Then on Lap 120 McFarland spun the car around and brushed the wall, damaging the right rear of the car. The team pitted three times to repair the damage and restarted the race on Lap 126 in 33rd position.

Just a couple laps later McFarland once again spun in an effort to miss the No. 7 car that wrecked ahead of him. He hit the wall and the team took the No. 88 to the garage area to repair the damage. McFarland returned to the track on Lap 139, 12 laps down to the leader in 37th position.

Despite the damage the car sustained, McFarland finished out the race in 33rd position.

“Given that we were racing close to home and it’s Memorial Day weekend, we wanted to have a good run and give the sailors across the world something to be proud of because we’re so proud of them, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be today,” Crew Chief Rich Hubbs said. “We were strong in the middle of the race, but we started out way too tight.

“The guys did a good job of fixing the car after we wrecked. This week we’ll concentrate on moving on to Dover and having a good run there.”

The 33rd-place finish cost McFarland one place in the driver’s points standings for the Busch Series, moving him down to 19th.

“We couldn’t miss anything,” McFarland said. “It started off real tight and once we got it freed up enough where it would turn then it was way too loose. We just beat all around the perfect deal tonight.

“We just couldn’t get it right and then I spun out and backed it in the fence and that didn’t help either. It was just a tough night here.”

Navy Racing in the Media

On Thursday, McFarland was a call-in guest on WTQR 104.1’s Good Morning Show. That evening he was interviewed on SPEED Channel before he went out for qualifying. On Saturday, he and Master Chief Banks were interviewed on the Performance Racing Network before the start of the race.
