Virginia Motor Speedway News
Virginia Motor Speedway To Host O’Reilly ASCS Sprint Cars This Saturday May 27TH
May 23, 2006 - updated May 23rd, 2006 11:11am
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, VA --

Yes Virginia, there are Sprint Cars. And they’re invading Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway this coming Saturday May 27th in perhaps the biggest Sprint Car event in the track’s history in the form of the O’Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour.

The Heintz Performance ASCS Southern Tour will join the ASCS National Tour contingent as they battle in the 2nd Annual Mason Dixon Challenge presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. A full ASCS 360 Sprint Car format will be in place that will not include time trials. The ASCS Sprint cars will compete in a series of heat races with passing points to set the “A” Main field. Making for an exciting night of fast family fun!

“We are very excited to have Emmett Hahn’s O’Reilly ASCS National Sprint Car Tour visit our speedway for the very first time. With Emmett’s reputation in the sprint car industry we are expecting great things,” commented VMS General Manager Clarke Sawyer.

“With Emmett’s help we hope to grow this into a huge annual sprint car event,” added Sawyer.

The track’s Late Model, Sportsman and Modified divisions will join the Sprint cars in some action packed, high octane, door slamming, racing with attitude this coming Saturday.

Adding to the night’s excitement the speedway will also host ASA Decal Giveaway Night. At the next racing event, independent track workers will be walking through the parking lot and randomly writing license plate numbers down with anyone having an ASA decal affixed to their automobile. The track will then be calling out numbers for prizes to be given away to those sporting the ASA decal.

Heading into this weekend’s action the point battles couldn’t be any closer. Jared Powell of Charlottesville, VA has the most comfortable lead as he enjoys a 39 point advantage over both defending champion Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, MD and Sommey Lacey of Clements, MD.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Walker Arthur of Forest, VA took over the point lead this past weekend from defending champion Roger Jamerson of Glen Allen, VA and heads into this weekend’s action with a scant 2 point advantage.

In the Budweiser Modified division Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA, after four events, holds a 9 point lead over the divisions most recent winner Brian Dobie of Partlow, VA.

When they return to action on Saturday June 3rd Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA will have a 2 point lead over Bob Terry of Fredericksburg, VA in The Al’s Auto Parts Charger Division and in the Dixie Chopper All American division young Dustin Owens of North, VA will be defending a 12 point advantage over Marty Coltrain of Richmond, VA.

Competitor gates for Saturday, May 27th will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. On track activities will begin at 6:15pm with hot laps. Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday: ASCS Sprint Cars (30 Laps); Victory Lap Late Models (35 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (30 Laps) and Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps). Late Model, Sportsman and Modified divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and features only.

Admission price for Adults $22, Seniors and Military $20; Students 13 – 17 years old $15, Children 7 – 12 years old $10 and Children 6 and under admitted free. The speedway offers a $2 discount coupon on the Speedway’s Website, good on any Adult, Senior and Military tickets only. Fans need to have a coupon for each ticket purchased.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track affiliate, is a 1/2-mile, dirt oval. The track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
