Jamie “The Jet” Lathroum Flying High With Victory At Virginia Motor Speedway
May 21, 2006 - updated May 21st, 2006 9:12am
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, VA --

Jamie “the Jet” Lathroum of Mechanicsville, MD returned back to form, using the high side to fly to his first win of the 2006 season in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. Lathroum took the lead from Sommey Lacey on lap nine with a high side pass out of turn 2 and then held off a late charge by lacey to pick up the victory.

“The track was to my liking, high and wide,” commented Lathroum. “He (Lacey) gave me the outside on lap nine and I said he ain’t going to give it to me too many more times so I better take it now,” added the every excited Lathroum.

Rounding out the top five were Sommey Lacey, Donnie Marshall, fourteenth starting Stevie Long and Jared Powell.

In other action Walker Arthur of Forest, VA ran the table in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature by setting fast time then starting eighth and then taking home his fourth victory of the season and third in a row. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature seventh place starting Brian Dobie of Partlow, VA took the lead on the last lap from Brent Bordeaux to take home his first victory of 2006. In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature John Imler of Edgewater, MD had to hold off a furious charge by Davis Lipscombe to take home his first victory of 2006 and eighth starting Dustin Owens of North, VA made it three in a row in the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature.

Roland Mann of Chaptico, MD set fast time in “Hot Lap” qualifying and inverted the top eight drivers for the start of the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature. On the drop of the green flag Sommey lacey and Donnie Marshall went at it side by side until caution fell on the field placing everyone single file.

On the restart Sommey Lacey took control with Marshall working to get to his inside. On lap 3 Lathroum went to the outside of Marshall to pick off the second spot and set out to catch Lacey. On lap 9 Lathroum went to the outside of Lacey as the two headed into turn 1 and took the lead as they exited out of turn 2.

On lap 18 Lathroum began to run up on traffic letting Lacey close the gap. On lap 19 while passing lap traffic Lathourm got up on the cushion causing his car to jump sideways allowing Lacey to get to his inside out of turn 2. Lathroum would hold on to the spot.

A late caution brought the field back together for a green, white, checkered finish. On the restart Lacey looked inside Lathroum as Marshall looked inside Lacey for position. Marshall got loose in turn four allowing fourteenth starting Stevie Long to take fourth. Lathroum would hold on to take the win over Lacey. Rounding out the top five were Donnie Marshall, fourteenth starting Stevie Long and Jared Powell. Walker Arthur picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his eighth place finish.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Walker Arthur set fast time yet again and inverted the top eight drivers. Arthur could start no closer than eighth anyway due to his two wins in a row in the previous races. Larry Bradsher and Chris Stacy brought the field to the green with Stacy taking the lead.

Caution came out for a spin by Bradsher in turn four on the opening lap. On the restart Chris Stacy and Daren Bolac went at it side by side as Arthur began his assault to the front. Stacy got loose allowing both Bolac and Arthur to get by for position. For the next six laps Bolac and Arthur went at it door to door until Arthur finally wrestled the spot away for the lead on lap 8. By lap 11 Roger Jamerson had worked his way into a battle with Bolac for second. On lap 13 Donnie Owens went after Jamerson for third only to have Jamerson take it back on lap 16.

On lap 15 seventeenth starting Tim Shelton had worked his way to fifth and now in the hunt. On lap 20 Arthur had a full straight lead on Bolac with Jamerson and Owens close behind. On lap 22 Bolac and Jamerson worked traffic with Bolac going low and Jamerson high. Jamerson came out with the second position but a long way from catching Arthur. The only thing to stop Arthur was the races final caution on lap 26. That closed the field on his bumper for the restart. At the drop of the green Arthur held off Jamerson and pulled away to take home his fourth win of the season a third in a row. Rounding out the top ten were Jamerson, Donnie Owens, Tim Shelton and Daren Bolac. Chris Stacy picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his eighth place finish.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Brian Dobie set fast time and inverted the top eight driver with the pill draw. That put Chuck marks and Eric Erwin leading the field to green. Erwin took control as the pair headed into turn 1 but would lose it to marks as the two raced off turn 2.

On lap 4 Renee Weeks, Bret Hamilton and Dobie battled over sixth as Marks and Brent Bordeaux battled for the lead. Bordeaux took the lead on lap 5 as the two raced off turn 4.

On lap 12 Tommy Shiflet dove inside Page Harrison for third. On lap 15 Shiflet took second with an inside move in turn 1 from Eric Erwin. Shiflet then closed on Bordeaux and on lap 23 dove to his inside for the lead. The two bounced off each other out of turn two allowing Shiflet to briefly take the lead before spinning in turn 4 on alp 23. That handed the lead back to Bordeaux with Page Harrison, Dobie and Hamilton in close pursuit. That made the restart a green, white, checkered finish.

As the top three headed into back into turn 1 for the final time Dobie dove to the inside of Harrison for second, and then went inside Bordeaux for the win out of turn 4. Rounding out the top five were Bordeaux, Bret Hamilton, Page Harrison and James Snead. Wayne Clark picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his ninth place finish.

In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature Bob Terry set fast time and inverted the top four drivers putting John Imler and James Givens on the front row leading the field to green. Imler and James raced side by side trading the lead back and fourth for the first five laps with Brian Maxey, Davis Lipscombe, Bob Terry and Paul Bess all side by side. The race first caution would come out on lap 5 for Bobby Kibler. On the restart Imler got a great restart and built himself a cushion over Givens who now had Maxey working him for second. Maxey took second but would later fall out due to mechanical problems.

With five to go the action was heating up as Imler worked hard to keep Lipscombe at bay. At the white flag lipscombe was looking inside Imler for the lead as Terry looked inside Lipscombe for second. Imler would hold off Lipscombe and Terry for the victory. Rounding out the top five were Davis Lipscombe, Bob Terry, Wesley Givens and Ernie Dettbarn. Wesley Givens picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fourth place finish.

In the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap nightcap heat race winners Marty Coltrain and Thomas Rose led the field to green. Coltrain took control as eighth place starting Dustin Owens worked his way to second with a strong move on Adam Hale.

On lap seven Owens muscled his way to the inside of Coltrain to take the lead. Coltrain tried diligently to get back by Owens over the closing laps of the race. Coltrain took several shots at taking back the lead, all unsuccessful as Owens would take home his third win of the young season. Rounding out the top five were Marty Coltrain, Gene Jamerson, Steven Adkins and Thomas Rose.
