TMS Racing & Chris Lewis Post First Top-5 of ‘06

TMS Racing Posts First Top-5 Finish of ‘06

NEWTON, NC – TMS Racing didn’t unload off the trailer last Saturday night like they had hoped to at Hickory Motor Speedway. The team struggled through both practice sessions during the afternoon while trying to get their #35 Monte Carlo fast for the evenings NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series Late Model Stock Car 50-lap feature event.

“It’s been a tough season so far in 2006 for this team. We know we have a good car, but it has just taken some time to get the car right and I think we hit on that right before qualifying for Saturday nights race,” smiled team driver Chris Lewis.

Chris rolled off the qualifying grid third with the #35 TMS Racing machine, posting the second fastest time of the 22 cars on hand for the evening’s event. Unfortunately, a last minute change prior to qualifying did not allow the team an opportunity to make sure the cars frame height was correct. “We made a spring change before qualifying and we measured it at our pit stall since all the level spots were closed by the officials, it was within the 4” minimum rule, but after qualifying the car didn’t measure up correctly in the tech building,” commented crew chief Tyler Lewis. He continued, “in over four years of racing down here I don’t think we have ever been to low after qualifying, but we made a mistake and we should have adjusted more since we had to check it on an unleveled surface,” continued Tyler.

“It was disappointing to have our qualifying time disallowed because we were too low, but rules are rules and we know we have a great car,” commented Chris prior to the start of the race. And right he was, Chris would start the race from the 20th position and over the course of a 26-lap green flag run to start the race, Chris worked his way up into the 13th position. Chris continued his way through the field on an ensuing restart quickly moving into the top-10. With a handful of laps remaining, Chris was running 7th when he ducked under two cars that had gotten sideways coming off of turn two and brought the TMS Racing #35 Monte Carlo home in the 5th position.

“It was a great run for this team. We have worked really hard and even though we might not be able to run the entire season, when our funds do allow us to race we’re going to be fighting for wins, but next time we will do a better job of starting where we qualify,” laughed Chris. “The car really ran great, we made a lot of changes over the past couple weeks that we took off and this team has never given up. When we weren’t racing for position the car was running faster laps than the leader, lap after lap, that’s encouraging, and that’s what we need to build on,” commented an enthusiastic Tyler Lewis.

Despite the 5th place finish in just their fourth career Late Model Stock Car start, TMS Racing, as of this writing, will have to miss the next two events due to funding. “When it comes to the tire bill we just don’t have the resources to get four tires like the other teams, and when the competition can get four, you have to get four if you want to be competitive,” stated Chris.

TMS Racing should return to action on June 10th at Hickory Motor Speedway unless sponsorship can be found prior to that date. Anyone interested in partnering with a professional, goal-oriented race team should contact Chris Lewis at 1.828.612.4333.

TMS Racing would like to thank Image First Design, On Track Promotions, NGK Spark Plugs, Smokem Racing Products, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and RaceRap.com for all their support in the 2006 race season.
