Speedway family mourns Hodges' passing

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA

Langley VP/GM King Hodges passes away Wednesday, April 19, 2006

With great sadness, Langley Speedway has announced the passing of King Hodges, the Speedway’s vice president and general manager, on Tuesday, April 18, at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Hospital in Richmond.
A retired business executive, Hodges, 57, had placed his retirement on hold to lend his acumen to his sister, Sandy Lemonds, as she became Langley’s new owner before the 2005 season, fulfilling the dream of her late husband, Dale, who died during a Legends race at the track in August 2004.
Under Hodges’ steady, day-to-day guidance, Langley Speedway enjoyed a resurgence in ‘05, reversing several seasons of decline, as longstanding tensions between the track management and the competitors and fans eased.
Even as Hodges deeply immersed himself in overseeing the revival of the Speedway, however, his own health was being jeopardized by pulmonary fibrosis, which ravaged his lung tissue and left him attached to an ever-present oxygen tank.
He underwent a potentially life-saving lung transplant at MCV on Monday, but complications quickly set in and he died a day later.
Hodges is survived by wife Marjorie, daughter Addy and son Jefferson.
Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, April 20, at Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Dr. in Grafton, Va., from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 21, at Williamsburg Baptist Church, 227 Richmond Rd. in Williamsburg, Va., with Amory Funeral Home in charge.
• • •
In deference to Thursday’s visitation, Langley’s regular, Thursday evening practice session has been canceled for this week. Also, the Speedway will be closed on Friday.
• • •
While hearts may be heavy, time marches ever forward and so must Langley Speedway, which will honor King Hodges this Saturday, April 22, when it hosts the second event on its 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series calendar.
Saturday’s feature lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models (75 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); NTELOS Wireless Super Streets (50 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends (25 laps).
Gates open at 12 noon and practice gets under way at 1:30 p.m. Time trials begin at 4. Pre-race activities, including a 20-lap race for the HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts, begin at 6:30. The evening’s first feature contest goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, there is no charge for military members in uniform. “Family Packs,” including two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats, a popular option, are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.
• • •
To show appreciation for King Hodges and support for the Hodges family, Langley Speedway has requested that those attending this Saturday’s racing program wear red shirts, a color for which King had a special affinity.
• • •
A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
To learn more about Langley Speedway and its schedule of upcoming events, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or visit the track’s Web site — www.langley-speedway.com.
