ROLAND THE MANN ON OPENING NIGHT AT VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY
Apr 2, 2006 - updated Apr 2nd, 2006 8:31pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, Va. --

Saluda, VA – Even Mother Nature couldn’t put a damper on WRAR/WNNT Opening Night ceremonies or keep Roland Mann of Chaptico, MD out of victory lane to start the 2006 season. Mann took the lead on lap 17 of the 35-lap Victory Lap Late Model feature and never looked back as he cruised to his first victory of 2006.

“I think we have won the first race of the season for the second year in a row now, it was a really good run tonight and I raced Jared clean and I don’t think I ever touched, I think we put on a pretty good show for the fans tonight,” commented Mann.

Following Mann to the checkers were Ronald Cusic, Jamie Lathroum, Jared Powell and Sommey Lacey.

In other action Walker Arthur of Forest, VA led flag to flag in dominating fashion to take home the victory in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature. In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA held off the charges of Bob Terry to claim the victory and in the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature Vernon Kirby of Glen Allen, VA held off a furious charges of both Dustin Owens and Marty Coltrain to pick up his career first win.

In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature Roland Mann picked up the Fast Time Award and then inverted the top four fastest drivers with the pill draw. That put Jared Powell and Ronlad Cusic on the front row leading the field to green. Powell jumped out to the lead from the outside but had Cusic and Roland Mann working him for the top spot.

Cusic made several attempts at Powell for the lead before losing the second spot to Mann on lap three. Mann then began to put pressure on the leader. On the lap 6 restart Mann got a good look to the inside of Powell, who was using the high side to his advantage, but couldn’t make the move stick. Making a move to the front was defending champion Jamie Lathroum who had worked is way into fourth from his thirteenth place starting position.

The battle in the top five was brutal with Powell staving off the many attempts to take the top spot. On lap 16 in turn 3 Mann muscled his way under Powell, taking the lead out of turn 4. Once in the lead the only thing to slow Mann were a couple of late cautions the last necessitating a green, white, checked finish.

On the last restart Mann got a great jump on Powell and the rest of the field with Cusic jumping to the outside of Powell to take second flowed by Lathroum for third. Mann took home the hard fought victory followed by Cusic, Lathroum, Powell and Sommey Lacey. The Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award went to Jason Cahall of Cordova, MD with his ninth place finish.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Walker Arthur of Forest, VA started where he left off last season by winning yet another Fast Time Award. Arthur then inverted the top four drivers to set the field. Derek Scott lead the first lap followed closely by Arthur on the outside. Arthur then went right to work taking the lead on lap two with a pass out of turn 2.

By lap 10 Arthur had worked his way to a full straightaway lead over Roger Jamerson, Tim Shelton, Jack Foulkes and Davis Lipscombe who had a tight battle for second. With Arthur’s lead never in jeopardy the battle was for the fifth spot with Lipscombe, Daren Bolac and Donnie Owens in an all out war. Owens would capitalize on a good setup to take the spot and then get fourth from Foulkes.

A caution on lap 26 closed the field on the back bumper of Arthur and on the restart Shelton was working feverously on him for the lead. Arthur held his composure and took home the victory by three car lengths. Rounding out the top five were Tim Shelton, Roger Jamerson, Donnie Owens and Jack Foulkes. The Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award went to Robert Kramer of Waldorf, MD with his seventh place finish.

In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature John Imler of Edgewater, MD set Fast Time and inverted the top six drivers for the start. On the drop of the green Davis Lipscombe took the lead from the outside followed by Bob Terry. Terry tried to stay with the leader but just didn’t have enough to get up beside him during the race.

Much of the excitement was behind the two front runners as Mark Wright, John Imler, Chris Tatum and James Givens swapped positions back and forth until Tatum took control of third with Givens settled into fourth.

A caution on lap 23 closed the field on the leader Lipscombe as Terry had one more chance to take the lead. Lipscombe was up to the task and held off Terry for the win. Rounding out the top five were Bob Terry, Chris Tatum, james Givens and Wesley Givens. The Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award went to Wesley Givens of New Kent, VA with his fifth place finish.

The last race of the night was probably the most entertaining with a three way battle for the lead that led to a first time win in the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature. Steve Atkins and Vernon Kirby led the field to green with Kirby taking the point out of turn 2 followed closely by Marty Coltrain and Dustin Owens. Both Coltrain and Owens tried moves that didn’t work and both saved as much as possible for a last ditch effort to get the win.

With some great racing behind them the top three drivers put on a clinic on how to entertain the fans. It went right down to the last lap with Coltrain looking to the inside of Kirby as Owens went to the outside of Coltrain. At the line it was Kirby followed by Owens inches over Coltrain for second. Rounding out the top five were Steven Atkins and David Bowler.
