SOUTH BOSTON, VA......Philip Morris took command on the final restart with 17 laps to go and drove away from his challengers to win the 100-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division race that headlined Saturday night's Danville Toyota Presents Bojangles NASCAR Late Model 100 racing program at South Boston Speedway.
Saturday night's win was the third of the season for Morris at South Boston Speedway, giving him three wins in the track's first five races.
Morris, from Ruckersville, Virginia edged defending South Boston Speedway Champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia by 1.505-second in taking the win.
Thomas Scott of Efland, North Carolina finished third, with Colin Garrett of South Boston, Virginia and Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Virginia completing the top five finishers.
The race was slowed by two caution periods, the first coming on lap 32 when Danny Willis Jr. of South Boston, Virginia spun in turn two. While the field was slowed under the caution flag, a rain shower forced track officials to stop the race for a brief period while track crews worked to dry the surface.
Morris pulled away from Sellers on the restart on lap 43 and built a solid lead only to see it erased when Max McLaughlin spun on lap 78 to bring out the caution flag for the second time in the race.
Morris took command of the race for good after the final restart, pulling away to take the checkered flag unchallenged to seal his third win of the season.
Layne Tops Field In Pure Stock Division Race
Johnny Layne of Nathalie, Virginia started on the pole and led all the way in winning Saturday night's 15-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.
Layne edged Harrison Walker of Buffalo Junction, Virginia by 1.22 seconds in taking his second win of the season at South Boston Speedway.
Scott Phillips of Halifax, Virginia finished third, Bruce Mayo of Halifax, Virginia finished fourth and Randy Hupp of Halifax, Virginia rounded out the top five finishers.
A severe thunderstorm that produced strong, vivid lightning and torrential rain forced speedway officials to have to cancel the remainder of the night's racing action. Because over half of the night's total number of laps of racing were completed, the night's racing program was deemed by track officials.
