Hickory Motor Speedway To Host Southern Modified Racing Series Saturday

Hickory Motor Speedway To Host Southern Modified Racing Series Saturday

HICKORY, N.C. – The Southern Modified Racing Series (SMRS) returns to Hickory Motor Speedway Saturday Night for the Fall Spectacular 75.  This is race 11 of the 12-race season and the tour brings a tight championship point battle into Saturday’s race.

Jeremy Gerstner, of Wesley Chapel, Fla., has a slim six-point advantage over Winston-Salem’s Brandon Ward.  With a 100-point scale, as well as bonus points, there is very little “wiggle room” for Gerstner or Ward.

The good news for Gerstner is that when the tour visited Hickory in July, he scored the victory and looks to back that win up Saturday night in a sweep of the 2017 races at the historic speedway.

The good news for Ward is that he has won four times this season, including the most recent race at Concord Speedway on September 16.

Bobby Measmer Jr. of Concord is third in the point, 36 behind Gerstner. Completing the top five are Tim Brown of Tobaccoville, a two-time winner this season; and Burt Myers, of Walnut Cove, who also has four victories this season.

A strong field of the top Modified drivers in the South are expected to compete at the historic .363-mile speedway.  The Modifieds will be joined by the Sportsman, Vintage, Charger and Allison Legacy racers.

Grandstands open at 4pm, a driver autograph session takes place at 6:20 and racing starts at 7pm.  Adult admission is $20, youth (7-14) is $5 with kids 6 and under admitted free.  Hickory Motor Speedway is located at 3130 Highway 70 Southeast in Newton.

More information on the Southern Modified Racing Series is available at www.SouthernModifiedRacingSeries.com or on the organizations Facebook page.

SOUTHERN MODIFIED RACING SERIES NOTEBOOK:

A MEASMER-STYLE COMEBACK

When the Southern Modified Racing Series teams loaded up after the most-recent race at Concord Speedway on September 16 a dejected Hughes Motorsports team and driver Bobby Measmer Jr. faced the possibility their season was over.   Prior to a mechanical problem at Concord, Measmer had been right in the middle of the point battle and was poised to make a run at the SMRS Championship.

Not only did the mechanical problem at Concord cause a setback in those championship hopes, but also appeared to put the team out of the racing business for a few weeks to rebuild.  However, in typical “hard-core racer” form the team went to work and earlier this week announced:

“After a couple of tough races, Concord being the most recent we had probably one of the most freak deals happen that I’ve ever had happen…..But, we’re not going to let that knock us down.  We WILL be at the SMRS race this weekend at Hickory Motor Speedway”

Measmer finds himself 36 points behind point leader Jeremy Gerstner and 30 back from Brandon Ward; but a misstep by either of the point leaders combined with a large field of cars expected at Hickory could find the former Concord Speedway late model track champion right back into the SMRS championship point battle.

BURT MYERS LEADS CHARITY EFFORT

Burt Myers watched in horror as Hurricane’s rolled across the Carrribean and struck the United States.  Led by a caring heart, Myers decided to do something and at the recent SMRS races at Caraway and Concord he has organized a fund-racing effort for Samaritan’s Purse to help with relief for those impacted by the Hurricanes.

Myers invited other teams to participate and at those races fans were invited to contribute to the fund during the driver autograph session, in return they would get to sign the race car of the driver’s car of choice.   At the tracks over $1,000 was been raised.  But, it got better; local businesses – Brad’s Golf Carts, Adams Towing and Kernersville Dodge – have jumped in a matched the fans putting the total over $4,000.

The campaign continues Saturday night at Hickory where fans are invited to participate – a minimum donation of $10 will allow that fan to sign a race car during the on-track autograph session at 6:20pm.  A majority of the teams, if not every team, are expected to participate.

Fans who can not make it to Hickory this Saturday can participate as a GoFundMe page has been established for fans outside the area:  https://www.gofundme.com/smrs-hurricane-relief .  Fans outside of the area can not only contribute but also have their name signed onto their favorite drivers car.

A STANDOUT ROOKIE:
With a month off in between his 2017 Pro All Stars Series schedule, Kodie Conner will be back in action this weekend at Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, North Carolina.  However, Conner will not be behind his familiar #45, or even a full-bodied Super Late Model.  Instead, he will make his debut behind the wheel of an open-wheel Modified for Hillbilly Racing in the Southern Modified Racing Series 75 in this weekend’s Fall Spectacular.
“I’ve watched Kodie for the last few years and I am impressed with his talent and success in the cars that he’s driven,” says David Hill, owner of Hillbilly Racing.  “I’m excited for this opportunity to work with him in his new adventure of driving a Modified.  I am wishing him all the success while he wheels one of the Hillbilly #79 cars.  Kodie has shown his talent behind the wheel of other race cars and I know he will do great things in a Modified.”
Conner currently sits in the second position in the 2017 Pro All Stars Series South point standings after his sixth place finish two weeks ago at South Boston Speedway.  The consistency and ability to take care of his equipment has opened up the opportunity for Conner to race a Modified this upcoming weekend.
“I am so excited to finally have the opportunity to drive a Modified,” says Kodie Conner, driver of the #45 Super Late Model in PASS.  My grandfather and my dad both raced a Modified back in New Jersey when they raced.  I cannot wait to experience the wider tires with that horsepower and against different drivers.”
A SMRS HISTORY LESSON:

The 2017 season is the second season for the Southern Modified Racing Series.  To date, 22 races have been held.  Eight different drivers have won SMRS Events:

Southern Modified Racing Series Race Winners:
                                6-Burt Myers
                                5-John Smith
                                4-Brandon Ward
                                2-Jonathan McKennedy, Tim Brown
1-Bobby Measmer Jr., Jason Myers, Jeremy Gerstner

Hickory Motor Speedway hosted the very first SMRS race, on March 26, 2016. Northern invader Jonathan McKennedy won that historic race.  The tour returned to the historic track on October 1 last year with John Smith of Mt. Airy getting the win.

In July of this year the tour made its third trip to Hickory and point leader Jeremy Gerstner scored his career-first series victory in that race.   Both Smith and Gerstner are expected to compete Saturday night.

LARGE STRONG FIELD EXPECTED:

The Southern Modified Racing Series does not do advance entries; so creating an official “entry list” is impossible.  The series relies on direct communications with teams, press releases and social media posts to gauge in advance who is likely to attend races.

The interest in Saturday’s Fall Spectacular 75 has been as strong as any race this year and early indications are at least 17 teams will be racing Saturday at Hickory.

The following drivers are expected:  Jeremy Gerstner, Brandon Ward, Bobby Measmer Jr., Tim Brown, Burt Myers, Jason Myers, Tom Buzze, John Smith, Mike Norman, Gary Putnam, Danny Bohn, James Civali, Kodie Conner, Daniel Yates, Crab Smith, Brian Lofton and Jamie Tomaino.

There is potential for other teams to show up and race on Saturday as well.
