LUCAMA, NC – Brian Obiedzenski heads into the regular season finale in the Charger division at Southern National Motorsports Park with a narrow point lead as he hopes to secure the championship on Sunday, September 10th.
With one win and four top-three finishes, the 32-year-old from Franklinton, North Carolina holds a one point advantage over Jonathan Kornegay in the battle for the Charger division championship. His victory, which came on March 26th, was a breakthrough win and propelled his potential championship season.
“Our season has been very solid,” Obiedzenski said. “I’m so proud of everyone who has had a hand in this program since this off season. We came off a good 2016, and made the necessary changes to compete up front every week. So far, we have been blessed to run strong, and perform as we hoped.”
While the pressure is on heading into the finale, Obiedzenski is simply having fun. He expects the championship race to be entertaining for the fans from the drop of the green flag to the drop of the checkered flag.
“Racing for a track championship with the point margin as narrow as it is has been fun,” Obiedzenski explained. “Jonathan is a great competitor with a really smart and talented group behind him. The 1 point will make it extremely exciting for the fans on September 10th, because the points lead will most likely change every lap as he and I run those 35 laps.”
Obiedzenski’s expectations in the season finale are simple, outrun Jonathan Kornegay and win the championship. However, he knows anything can happen.
“The entire team hopes to be in the lead when the checkered flag falls on September 10th, but this is grassroots racing where anything can happen, and you never feel comfortable.”
Winning the championship would be a career highlight and a dream come true for the veteran racer.
“A Southern National track championship would be the biggest highlight of my career,” Obiedzenski elaborated. “I’ve ran hundreds of races in all typ
es of cars, all over the country, but The Park is special. Only the top drivers come out of here each summer with a title. I’m hoping 2017 will be the year that my family, sponsors and fans can celebrate with me. We’ve worked so hard in the garage, on social media, in the pits and on track, I want it bad.”
The Charger division championship, along with championships in the Late Model, Mini Stock, Legends and Bandolero classes, will be contested on Sunday, September 10th at Southern National Motorsports Park.
