Night of Destruction Thrills Overflow Crowd at Franklin County Speedway
Jun 7, 2017 - updated Jun 7th, 2017 3:48am
Web posted by Langley Austin

--

1The Karnage Karnival Night of Destruction came to Callaway, Virginia on Saturday June 3rd and it didn't disappoint delivering thrilling spills and hard crashes to the delight of the biggest crowd at Franklin County Speedway in several decades.

The night started off a little late as fans poured in the gates two wide for hours with a backup into Callaway Road for several miles.  It was a sight many said that they hadn't seen since the 1980's.  Once the lines began to slim down the racing action was started up and the overflow crowd piled into the grandstands.

First up was some racing action in the Mini Cups, East Coast Flatheads and the all new Stock 4 divisions.  Jeff Davis of Redwood, VA won the Mini Cup feature with Donovan Freeman taking the win in the Flatheads and Corey Mullins of Rocky Mount, VA took the first ever Stock 4 win, which would be a preview of things to come for him as he had his car entered in several other divisions.

After the regular race events were over it was time for the destruction and mayhem to begin and it proved to be destructive and entertaining as promised.  First up was the Tire Stack race where 10 used tires from the Late Model Stock Cars that normally race at the track were stacked on top of each car.  The object of the race was to keep the most tires on the car while completing five laps the fastest.

The action was intense with several cars getting their tires knocked off and then retaliating to knock off other competitors tires.  By the races end several cars were in the wall, tires were everywhere and Brandi Raymer the lone female entry was taking the checkered flag to win $200.

Leaving the tires where they lay, next up was the Backwards race where all the cars were in reverse gear for five laps around the track.  Charlie Payne driving the same car as Brandi Raymer competed in for the Tire Stack race put on a clinic.  He cruised around the track at a speedy pace never skipping a beat on his way to victory.  While he was driving to victory one of the most intense moments of the night happened at Dakota Hall flipped his Ford Explorer over.  He would come out of the car ok with only minor injuries.

In the highly anticipated Blindfold race Austin Smith would take the win after bouncing off the walls several times.  His passengers were throwing tires on the track as they went around in hopes of slowing their competitors and making for a fun time for the fans to watch.

The Flagpole race was one of the most exciting of the night as many fans remarked that this 10-lap race was worth the price of admission.  Out in the country in Callaway, VA the flagpoles were replaced with hay bales and the object of the race was to circle the two hay bales completely in turns 1 and 4 before completing a lap.  The race was exciting as cars drifted to complete their turns around the hay bales, one even knocking the one in turn 4 way down the track.

The racers continued on despite the challenges of the hay bale not being centered in the turn and put on a thrilling race.  Chad McDowell kept his car out front despite getting into some lapped traffic while Charlie Payne and Josh Taylor raced hard behind him for the second spot.  McDowell would take the win while Payne and Taylor battled to the finish never gaining on McDowell.

Also during the course of the night a Tuff Truck Tug-of-War contest and a Burn Out competition.  Scott Mills of Rocky Mount took home the win in the Tug-of-War in his Ford SUV over Chris Meeks of Collinsville who was in a Ford truck.  Trey Cooper took home the win in the fan voted Burn Out Competition.  He put on a show and won $250 in a Ford Mustang he had just $400 in.

Corie Trivett and Ricky Kimel might have been the only two entries for the $750 to win large car derby but they put on a great show crashing and bashing into one another until something broke in Kimel's car and handed the win to Trivett.

In the $1,000 to win Any Car feature 22 cars showed up to battle but after several cars competed in the other events we were down to 15 for the 50-lap shootout which proved to be more than entertaining.  Mullins who won the Stock 4 race earlier in the night dominated the Any Car race leading nearly every lap on his way to the $1,000 payday.  Mullins managed to avoid the karnage as cars sat all over the track and finished a lap ahead of the field.

David Lucas of Floyd finished second ahead of Kevin Greidonus of Danville finished third with Patrick Janney of Vinton fourth and Randall Whitingham completing the top five finishers in the $1,000 to win Any Car feature.

The next Night of Destruction event will be paired with a night of racing and Fireworks on Tuesday July 4th.  The Independence Blast will feature "Fireworks, Racing & Mayhem!" with a 60-lap Late Model race, twin 15-lap Mini Stock races, 20-lap Stock 4, Bowling with Cars, Hay Bale race, $1,000 to Win Any Car and more to be added.  Plus a free Fireworks show will light up the night sky following the event.
