Rougemont, NC. --
Chuck Lawson drove to his first win of the 2016 season in a 50 lap late model stock car race at Orange County Speedway on Saturday night.
Lawson started from the pole and held off a hard charging Chris Denny to take the triumph. Terry Dease drove to third in a backup car after his primary mount developed a serious miss in qualifying.
Lawson was happy, but somewhat reserved in victory lane. " I wish some of the other top cars had been here" he remarked. Previous 2016 winners Craig Moore and Layne Riggs were not on hand. Moore is reportedly fighting an illness while Riggs chose to run a CARS series event in Hudson, N.C.
Ross Boo Boo Dalton survived a sensational duel with Daryl Carver to garner the limited sportsman checkers. The duo ran side by side for many of the 35 laps before Dalton pulled away late. " That's a good driver and a good car right there" Dalton stated about Carver. " We're gonna have our hands full the rest of the year ". Pole sitter Chris Elliott was a strong third.
In the night's other races... Jarrett Milam held off Mikey Milam after 25 tough laps to take the laurels in pure stock, Jerry Wilkerson out dueled Jared Gilles in a 25 lap street stock affair, Scott Martin passed Brook Beckman on the final of 20 laps to best a four truck lead battle in super mini trucks, Jason Anderson bested Keith Olivier in a 20 lapper for mod fours and Don Lassiter led all ten markers in a race for vintage sportsman machines.
Racing returns to OCS on June 25 with the running of the fourth annual Paul Ring Memorial .
