NASCAR Busch Series Driver Stacy Compton Becomes Team Owner

Daytona Beach, Fla. --

Launches Twin NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Teams At His Home Tracks

March 24, 2006

A popular and successful veteran of all three NASCAR national series adds car ownership to his portfolio this year.

NASCAR Busch Series driver Stacy Compton, of Grit, Va. will field a pair of NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Model Stock Cars this year. The cars will compete weekly at separate Virginia NASCAR tracks where Compton, 38, established his own NASCAR career more than a decade ago.

Steven Berry, 17 of Huddleston, Va., and Adam Barker, 19, of Altavista, Va., both applied for their 2006 NASCAR licenses on March 21. They are similarly prepared but still preparing:

• Both competed in the Limited Sportsman division at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., in 2005 and finished in the top-10 in track points; Barker fifth and Berry ninth;

• Both are college enrollees, Barker in his first year, Berry starting this fall;

• Both are currently enrolled in the Dale Carnegie School of Public Speaking;

• Like Compton, both competed in go cart racing with success until age allowed them to move up to full sized stock cars;

• Berry will race exclusively at Motor Mile Speedway, while Barker will race exclusively at South Boston (Va.) Speedway;

Both would certainly like to follow Compton’s career path at the showcase tracks where Compton launched his own efforts, ultimately forming the foundation for his triple series NASCAR career.

His choice of drivers was simple, Compton said.

“Both of them have their heads on straight and they know what they want to do. They want to go racing,” Compton said. “The biggest reason, though, is I think they have as much raw talent as anyone I’ve seen in a long, long time. I’ve been watching them for a couple of years from go-carts to Limited Sportsman.

“Adam’s in college and Stephen is enrolled to start college in the fall. We’ve enrolled both of them in the Carnegie School for Public Speaking. They’re good kids and they’re local. I’ve looked at a number of young drivers for two years. These two have a ton of talent.

“I was going to do one team, but when it came down to it, I couldn’t cut either one. So we decided to do one at South Boston and one at Motor Mile. Hopefully we can open some doors with them and get these guys going down the career road,” Compton said. “We’re pretty excited about it.”

Racing primarily at those two tracks through the mid-1990s, Compton amassed 36 wins, 39 poles and more than 150 top-5 finishes over seven years of NASCAR Late Model Stock Car competition. He was selected to win the Most Popular Driver Award five times at three tracks. He won the 1994 South Boston Speedway Late Model Stock Car division championship in 1994, and returned to finish second in 1995.

Compton burst onto the NASCAR national scene in 1996, when he turned in a ninth-place qualifying effort for his first career NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. He enjoyed a competitive 200 laps until brake problems set in. Compton had competed with success in many of Martinsville’s prestigious NASCAR Late Model Stock Car events over the years.

Compton has won two NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Bud Pole Awards at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway; two race victories in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series; and has a Busch Pole and finished as high as second (four times) in the NASCAR Busch Series where he competes full-time today.

Compton’s team, officially known as Turn One Racing LLC, is being guided by General Manager Herb Bailey, who worked with Compton in Late Model Stock Cars, as well as Steve Dalton who will crew chief Barker’s car.

The teams are seeking primary sponsorship, but have associate sponsorship from Feller’s Chevrolet of Altavista, Riverview Plumbing of Hurt, Va., and Duck Head Footwear and Apparel.

Berry is the son of Bill and Linda Berry, a senior at New Covenant School in Lynchburg, and enrolled for the fall semester at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

Barker is the son of Thad and Debbie Barker, a graduate of Altavista High School, and in his first year of college in Lynchburg.

Compton and his wife Vickie are parents of a daughter, Olivia Grace, and reside in the driver’s hometown of Grit, Va. Compton in his fifth year of driving the No. 59 Kingsford Ford for the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing team based in Harrisburg, N.C.
