Pulliam, Bowling split SBS twinbill; four division champs crowned

South Boston, Va…..The point spread in the chase for the South Boston Speedway NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division crown didn’t change much as Lee Pulliam and Matt Bowling split wins in the GCR Presents Spaulding Equipment Co. NASCAR Late Model Twin 75’s Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

Bowling led Pulliam by 29 points entering Saturday night’s twinbill, and when the night ended, Pulliam had won the first race and finished third in the nightcap while Bowling finished second in the first race and won the second race.

The two drivers have a twin-race event on Saturday night, Sept. 19, the final night of racing for the season at South Boston Speedway, to settle the championship chase.

Pulliam took the lead from Bowling on lap 46 in the first 75-lap Late Model Stock car Division race and edged Bowling by .908-second to score his ninth win of the season at the .4-mile oval.

Former NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia finished third with Austin Thaxton of South Boston, Virginia and Mark Wertz of Chesapeake, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.

As a result of having won two races in a row, Pulliam, under track rules, had to start mid-pack (10th) in the second race. He made his way up to as high as third place, but that was as far as he could get.

Juan Garcia of Bogata, Columbia started on the pole as the result of an inverted start among the top six finishers of the first race and led until Bowling rallied from his fifth-place starting spot to overtake Garcia with six laps to go.

Eric Winslow of Pelham, North Carolina, driving Bowling’s backup car, started 13th but steadily picked his way toward the front of the field. He passed Garcia for second place with three laps to go and held on to finish second, .380-second behind Bowling, and score his career-best Late Model Stock car Division finish.

Pulliam finished third with Garcia taking fourth place and Sellers rounding out the top five finishers in the 19-car field.

Crews wins SBS Limited Sportsman Division title

Trey Crews of Halifax, Virginia won his first South Boston Speedway Limited Sportsman Division crown Saturday night with a second-place finish behind winner Joey Throckmorton of South Boston, Virginia in Saturday night’s 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

Crews trailed defending champion Danny Willis, Jr. of Cluster Springs, Virginia by one point entering the race, but Willis was involved in an early-race incident with Mike Jones on lap 28 that damaged Willis’ car and necessitated a pit stop for repairs. Willis finished seventh in the race.

The win was the second of the season for Throckmorton, who edged Crews by 1.008-second in the victory. Jones, of South Boston, Virginia, finished third, with Calvin Meadows of Martinsville, Virginia and Billy Myers of Hurt, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.

Rudy takes Modified Division championship

Mike Rudy of Prince George, Virginia won his first career South Boston Speedway Modified Division championship Saturday night with a second-place finish behind race winner and chief title challenger Matt Slye of Williamsburg, Virginia in the night’s 50-lap Modified Division race.

Rudy entered the race with an eight-point lead over Slye in the title chase, and his second-place finish to Slye in the race gave him the division title by an unofficial three-point margin.

Slye’s win was his first of the season and he became the fourth different winner in the division with the victory. Mark Slye finished third, with Chris Humblet of Shiloh, North Carolina and Jimmy Humblet of Shiloh, North Carolina rounding out the top five finishers.

Autry wins Pure Stock Division race and division title

Greg Autry of South Boston, Virginia won Saturday night’s 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock Division race and secured his second straight South Boston Speedway Pure Stock Division title in the process.

Autry, who had all but clinched the title heading into the race, won the pole and sped to a two-second win over Johnny Layne of Nathalie, Virginia, leading the entire race in the process.

D.J. Moser of South Boston, Virginia finished third, with Harrison Walker of Buffalo Junction, Virginia and Colin Garrett of Elmo, Virginia completing the top five.

Winslow wins Hornets Division title; Garnett wins race

Eric Winslow of Pelham, North Carolina already had the South Boston Speedway Hornets Division title in hand entering Saturday night’s 15-lap race. It was a good thing he had already locked up the title.

Winslow was involved in a first-lap crash that heavily damaged his car and sidelined him for the rest of the race, leaving him with an eighth-place finish.

Todd Garnett of Drakes Branch, Virginia took the lead from Kirstin Simmons on the third lap and held off his challengers in a three-lap dash after the race’s final caution flag to win the race and record his third straight victory.

Chase Parsons of Charlotte Courthouse, Virginia finished second, with Simmons finishing third, Drew Dawson finishing fourth and Kevin Currin of Chase City, Virginia completing the top five finishers.
