Roughment, NC. --
Stacy Puryear started from the pole and led all 75 laps in the late model stock portion of Saturday night's Sherry Love Johnson Memorial race at Orange County Speedway.
The event is named in honor of the late track worker who passed away from cancer a little over a year ago.
Puryear was never seriously challenged as he easily was the class of the ten car field which included five former track champions. Puryear took the crown in 2008. "We"ll be back with this car next week" he stated in victory lane. Puryear is expected to be one of the favorites as the CARS touring series rolls into town. The likable South Boston native will compete in the 150 lap late model stock half of the doubleheader. Super late models will compete in the other half at the three-eighths mile asphalt oval. No regular track divisions will compete next weekend.
Chuck Lawson survived a sizzling duel with newcomer Layne Riggs to win the 35 lap limited sportsman tussle. Riggs lost a probable runnerup finish when he spun in the second turn while trying to pass Lawson for the lead in the late stages. Riggs began his debut race in the division from the pole position and served notice that he will be a strong contender for the 2015 division championship.
In the night's other races... Defending street stock champ Jerry Wilkerson outbattled Jared Gillis to win a 25 lap street stock race, James Peery took his very first victory in the track's pure stock class, Jeffrey Martin copped the 20 lapper for super mini trucks, Jantzen Stirewalt outclassed the field in the 35 lap Allison Legacy feature and Keith Oliver was the victor in a 20 lap return for the Mod fours.
