Whelen So. Mod News & Notes: South Boston
Seuss Looks To Sweep In Front Of Hall Of Famer

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 8) – Although he fell just short in trying a record at North Carolina’s Caraway Speedway last weekend, Andy Seuss has a lot to race for this Saturday in the South Boston 150 at Virginia’s South Boston Speedway.

Seuss won the spring race at the track and enters this weekend with a 23-point advantage in the standings. While Seuss is still searching for his first NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship, he has a chance to pick up a win in front of a future NASCAR Hall of Fame member.

Rex White, the 1960 champion of what is now known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and recently elected into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, will serve as Grand Marshal and be on hand to meet with fans.

White scored 28 victories in NASCAR’s premiere series during his career and made three starts at South Boston, highlighted by a win at the track in 1962.

Seuss led all but one lap in the spring race at South Boston and will try to score his third career win at the historic track.

George Brunnhoelzl III is the only other previous winner currently entered for the race and he finished second in the spring race after having to start at the rear of the field for adjustments made to his car after qualifying. Brunnhoelzl took home the checkered flag there on April 13, 2013.

While 23 points is not a huge deficit, Brunnhoelzl will need to rebound from two disappointing finishes in a row to close in on Seuss as he continues his quest for a fifth tour championship.

FAST FACTS
The Race:  The South Boston 150 will be the seventh all-time race for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour at South Boston Speedway, and the second of two in 2014.

The Procedure:  The maximum starting field is 26 cars, including provisionals. The first 23 cars will qualify through two-lap time trials. The remaining three spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race is scheduled for 150 laps (60 miles) with teams having an opportunity to pit and change one tire during the event.

The Track:  South Boston is a .4-mile high-banked asphalt oval located in South Boston, Virginia. The facility features NASCAR Whelen All-American Series-sanctioned events on Saturday nights throughout the racing season, headlined by the late model division.

Race Winners:  Andy Seuss won the spring race at South Boston to become the first repeat winner at the track in six previous races at the track. Seuss won the tour’s inaugural race there on April 4, 2009.

Pole Winners:  There have been four different pole winners in the previous six events. George Brunnhoelzl III is the only driver with two, and qualifying was rained out in 2011. L.W. Miller holds the NWSMT track qualifying record at 14.466 seconds and 99.544 mph, set on April 14, 2012.

SOUTH BOSTON RACE NOTES
Can Myers Make It Three In A Row: Burt Myers will attempt to become just the fourth driver in the 10-year history of the tour to win three races in a row this Saturday in the South Boston 150. If Myers can take the checkered flag back to Walnut Cove, N.C. he would join Brian Loftin, Andy Seuss and George Brunnhoelzl in that elite club.

Stinson, Winstead Ready To Return: It will be a Homecoming for Virginia natives Thomas Stinson and A.J. Winstead. Both drivers call the Commonwealth home and each will be in action this weekend. Stinson has four starts at South Boston with a best finish of fourth (2010); while Winstead has made two starts at the track finishing 15th in the spring race.

Davis Continues To Impress In Rookie Race:  When fans hear the town of Dawsonville, Georgia, mentioned, long-time race fans might first think of Bill Elliott while younger fans might think of Chase Elliott. There is another driver from the tiny Georgia town quickly making a name for himself in the modified world. Spencer Davis remains atop the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings and leads Joe Ryan Osborne and Bobby Measmer Jr. for the honor.

HOME TRACKS:  SoBo Late Models Prepare For Twin 75’s
Peyton Sellers in having a great NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season at South Boston Speedway in the track’s late model division. Sellers, a past national champion, swept twin 100s on opening weekend and will try and bookend the season with wins this Saturday in the Twin 75-lap features as part of the race card. Sellers leads Matt Bowling in the track standings by 75 points (556-481) and is seventh over in the Division I national standings. Bowling won the non-points Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown at the track in April.

LAST TIME OUT:  Caraway
The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour competed at Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina, with Burt Myers scoring his second consecutive victory in the Southern Pride 150. The Caraway win by Myers was his first at the track since 2005. It was also the first time Myers has won back-to-back races since 2010.

NEXT TIME OUT:  Southern National
The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will next head to Southern National Motorsports Park for the second time this season. J.R. Bertuccio scored his first career victory at the track in the spring event and returns in the top five in the point standings. Myers is the only repeat winner at the track in six previous tour races.
