Bowling, Pulliam Split SBS LMSC Twinbill

South Boston, Va…..Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Virginia and Lee Pulliam of Alton, Virginia split wins in the pair of 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division races that headlined Saturday night’s GCR Presents Spaulding Equipment NASCAR Late Model Twin 75s racing program at South Boston Speedway.

Bowling started on the inside of the front row after Pulliam, who won the pole, had to start at mid-pack under a track rule that specifies that a driver that wins two races in a row must start in the middle of the field.

He led all but one lap of the race, but had to fend off stiff challenges from Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, North Carolina and Josh Oakley of Rougemont, North Carolina to earn his first win of the season at the .4-mile oval.

McCaskill finished second, Oakley took third place, Pulliam finished fourth and former NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion and South Boston Speedway track champion Peyton Sellers of Ringgold, Virginia rounded out the top five finishers.

Bowling had to start tenth in the nightcap after a drawing to determine how many cars would be inverted for the start of the second race. Oakley took the lead from Justin Johnson on the 12th lap and Pulliam rallied to take the lead from Oakley on lap 23.

Once in front, Pulliam had clear sailing the rest of the way and drove to a 2.692-second win over Oakley in the race that saw the lead swap hands twice among three drivers. McCaskill finished third, Johnson, of Semora, North Carolina, finished fourth and Ronald Hill of Rougemont, North Carolina completed the top five finishers.

The win was the 22nd win of the season for Pulliam and was his seventh win of the season at South Boston Speedway.

Willis wins Limited Sportsman Division title

Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Virginia won his third career South Boston Speedway Limited Sportsman Division title in what was the closest title race in the history of the division at South Boston Speedway with third-place finishes in the night’s pair of 25-lap Limited Sportsman Division races.

Willis’ title bid almost unraveled. He was leading the second 25-lap race, racing in a pack trying to fend off challenges from Trey Crews of Halifax, Virginia, Tommy Peregoy of Clarksville, Virginia and J.D. Eversole of Richmond, Virginia when Peregoy’s car made contact with Willis’ car and Willis spun, collecting both Crews and Eversole.

Crews, Willis and Eversole, all of whom were in contention for the division title, pitted during the ensuing caution period for quick repairs to their cars. Willis, Eversole and Crews restarted sixth, seventh and eighth respectively, but it was Willis that had the most success as he rallied to edge Charles Barnes of Chase City, Virginia to finish third behind race winner Joey Throckmorton of South Boston, Virginia and runner-up Bob Davis of Thaxton, Virginia.

Eversole, who won the first 25-lap race, finished fifth and Crews finished sixth, with the result being that Willis and Eversole tied in points. Since both drivers had three wins, track officials had to go to the number of second-place finishes by the two drivers to determine the division champion, and it was Willis that had the edge.

Eversole’s win in the first 25-lap race was his third win of the season at South Boston. Crews finished second and Willis finished third. Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, Virginia finished fourth and Peregoy rounded out the top five finishers.

Throckmorton’s win in the second race was his second victory of the season at South Boston Speedway, and it came by a margin of 2.573 seconds over Davis.

Autry wins Budweiser Pure Stock Division title

Greg Autry of South Boston, Virginia finished fifth in both of the night’s pair of 15-lap races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, but it was good enough for Autry to win his first career South Boston Speedway Budweiser Pure Stock Division championship.

Nathan Crews of Long Island, Virginia, competing for the first time this season at South Boston Speedway, raced his way to victory in both races. Johnny Layne of Nathalie, Virginia and Eric Crews of Long Island, Virginia rounded out the top three finishers in the first race.

Stuart Crews of Long Island, Virginia finished second to Nathan Crews in the second race, with Layne finishing third.

Currin wins Hornets Division title

Kevin Currin of Chase City, Virginia finished fourth in Saturday night’s 15-lap race for the Hornets Division, but it was good enough to give Currin the division championship.

Eric Winslow of Pelham, North Carolina, making his first start in the division, scored a flag-to-flag win, edging Kenny Mills of South Boston, Virginia. Fourteen-year-old Kirstin Simmons of LaCrosse, Virginia, competing in her first-ever auto race, finished third.

Next Event At South Boston Speedway

South Boston Speedway will host its final NASCAR racing event of the season Saturday night, September 13, with the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150/NASCAR Late Model Twin 75’s racing program.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150/NASCAR Late Model Twin 75’s racing program will start at 7 p.m. and will include a 150-lap race for the stars and cars of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour and twin 75-lap races for the drivers and teams in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division.

Practice will run from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. with alternating sessions for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour teams and the NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division competitors.
