NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour News & Notes: Bowman Gray
- · Southern Mods Return To Historic Quarter-Mile Track
- · Seuss Looks To Extend Lead, Pick Up First Stadium Touring Win
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 28, 2014) – The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will have its sixth event of the season this Saturday night at one of the most popular venues on the 2014 schedule – Bowman Gray Stadium for the Strutmasters.com 199.
Through the first five races of the season it has been almost all Andy Seuss as the Hampstead, New Hampshire, driver has picked up three wins and enters this weekend with an 11-point lead over George Brunnhoelzl III (227-216).
While Seuss has amassed an impressive resume competing in the south full-time since 2008, the one thing he hasn’t done is win at the Stadium.
In his six previous tour starts at the Stadium, Seuss has finished with five top-10 finishes, highlighted by three fifth-place showings. Seuss, known mostly for his strong performances in the second half of the season, is just one win short of equaling his career-high for victories in a season with four, set back in 2009. If Seuss can pick up the win this weekend it could be a big momentum boost heading into the stretch run of the 2014 season with three races in the month of August and seven in a row to finish the season.
Last year NASCAR Next driver and defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Ryan Preece came down to North Carolina and picked up his first win in the Southern Tour, winning from the pole. This year Preece is not scheduled to defend his win, opening the door for a new winner this season.
Several drivers entered this weekend who have picked up a tour win at the Stadium include Brunnhoelzl, Burt Myers, Brian Loftin, Luke Fleming and Jason Myers. Fleming is also the only driver in the history of the NWSMT to win in his first official tour start at the Stadium picking, up the surprise victory in 2009.
During the first five events of the season in the spring, Seuss rolled to a pair of Caraway wins as well as his second career win at South Boston Speedway on April 5. JR Bertuccio earned his first career victory on March 15 at Southern National Motorsports Park and Brunnhoelzl took the checkered flag on April 12 at Langley Speedway.

Bowman Gray Race Notes
Bowman Gray Sets New Mark: Saturday’s Strutmasters.com 199 will be the 10th NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event at Bowman Gray Stadium. Only one track on the schedule has hosted more tour races than BGS.
Large Crowd Expected: Large crowds at Bowman Gray Stadium are not uncommon and with good weather forecasted for this weekend, the tour regulars will compete in front of one of the largest crowds of the season at a track that averages 16,000-20,000 spectators each week.
Championship Caliber Field: With the addition of 2011 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour titlist Ron Silk, there will be a total of four champions in the field. Joining Silk will be Brunnhoelzl, Burt Myers, and Brian Loftin.

Lee Jeffreys leads the NASCAR Whelen All-American modified standings at Bowman Gray Stadium with Jason Myers in tow just one point behind after winning the second of twin 50-lap features last week.

Brunnhoelzl was able to pass Seuss on Lap 85 and go on to win the spring event at the track.
