South Boston, Va. --

Matt Bowling scored the biggest triumph of his racing career Thursday night, winning the 7th Annual Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown at South Boston Speedway.

Bowling, from Ridgeway, Va., sped past race leader Matt Waltz of Newport News. Va. with five laps to go and edged Waltz by .671 second to take the victory and the $10,000 winners’ prize.

Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. finished third, with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stars Kyle Busch of Las Vegas, Nev. and Matt Kenseth of Cambridge, Wis. rounding out the top five finishers in the 200-lap, 80-mile race.

Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C., Myatt Snider of Charlotte, N.C., NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star Denny Hamlin of Chesterfield, Va., Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. and Ryan Preece of Berlin Conn. rounded out the top 10 finishers.

Thursday night’s race at South Boston Speedway was a celebrity-laden all star charity event held to raise funds for the Denny Hamlin Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis research.

South Boston Speedway officials said the race was a sellout, and deemed the event a huge success.

Track officials along with Hamlin said the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown will return to South Boston Speedway in 2015.

Waltz won the pole and led the first 195 laps before Bowling, who took second place from Busch on lap 93, made his late bid to take the win. Bowling quickly pulled away from Waltz after taking the lead and was not challenged at the end.

Bowling averaged 57.342 mph in the race that was slowed by 10 caution periods that consumed 57 laps.

The race took 1 hour, 52 minutes and 56 seconds to complete.

Waltz won the day’s first 20-lap qualifying heat race, with Bowling taking the win in the second 20-lap heat race. Busch won the last of the three races.
