Thaxton Scores Win At South Boston Speedway South Boston
Mar 23, 2014 - updated Mar 23rd, 2014 10:59am
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, Va. --

The competition is wide open at South Boston Speedway.

Austin Thaxton of South Boston, Va. became the second different winner in as many events at South Boston Speedway Saturday afternoon, winning the NASCAR Whelen Late Model 100.

The win was Thaxton’s first career win in NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division competition.

Thaxton started third and was in the thick of the battle for the win all race long. He got a good jump on race leader Matt Bowling on the race’s final restart on lap 51 and cleared Bowling to take the lead on lap 52.

Bowling and Peyton Sellers, who had rallied from his 11th starting position to move into third place on the 52nd lap, kept the pressure on Thaxton, but Thaxton held off the two challengers, edging Sellers, who swept the season-opening twinbill, by .428-second.

Bowling finished third, with Brandon Butler of Sutherland and division rookie Michael Maresca of Hannawa Falls, N.Y. rounding out the top five finishers.

Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C., Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va., Tommy Lemons Jr. of Troy, N.C., C.E. Falk III of Mooresville, N.C. and Thomas Scott of Mebane, N.C. rounded out the top ten finishers in the 100-lap race.

Thaxton averaged 70.704 mph in recording the win.

Crews Takes Limited Sportsman Victory

Trey Crews of Halifax, Va. made it two different winners in as many races, winning Saturday afternoon’s 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

Crews led on three different occasions, taking the lead for the final time after the restart that followed the race’s fifth and final caution period. Joey Throckmorton of South Boston, Va. and Daniel Moss of Danville, Va. were battling for second place behind Crews on the final lap, but tangled and spun in the fourth turn as they were racing to the checkered flag.

That opened the door for Tommy Peregoy of Clarksville, Va. and Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill, N.C. to sweep in and take second place and third place respectively. Daryn Cockram of Blacksburg, Va. and division rookie Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.

Autry Makes It Two Wins In A Row In Pure Stocks

Greg Autry of South Boston, Va. is a perfect two-for-two.

Autry started on the pole and led flag-to-flag to win Saturday afternoon’s 30-lap race for the competitors in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Johnny Layne of Nathalie, Va. finished second with Bruce Mayo of Halifax, Va., Jimmy Wade of Halifax, Va. and Jeff Deering of Axton, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.

            Humblett Wins Modified Division Race

Jimmy Humblett of Shiloh, N.C. started on the pole and led from flag to flag to win Saturday afternoon’s 50-lap race for the Modified Division.

Humblett fended off a bid for the lead from Chris Johnson of Mechanicsville, Va. on the final restart with six laps to go. Mike Rudy of Prince George, Va. jumped up to wrestle second place from Johnson a lap later and held onto second place the rest of the way, with Johnson finishing third. Mike Johnson of Midlothian, Va. and Matt Slye of Lanexa, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.

Whitely Wins Debut Race For Hornets Division

Corey Whitely of Rougemont, N.C. won the 15-lap race for South Boston Speedway’s new entry-level Hornets Division that made its debut at the .4-mile oval Saturday afternoon.

Wesley Thomason of Roanoke, Va. took second place and Kevin Currin of Chase City finished third. Jeremy Darley of Roanoke, Va. and Austin Milam of Ringgold, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.

Next Race At South Boston Speedway

One of the bigger events of the season at South Boston Speedway is on tap Saturday afternoon, April 5, when America’s Hometown Track hosts the 2 p.m. running of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 racing program.

A 150-lap race for the stars and cars of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will headline the afternoon’s action, with the region’s NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division competitors being featured in twin 75-lap feature races.

Advance tickets are on sale for $10 each, with advance tickets being available until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4. Adult general admission tickets on race day will be priced at $15. Youth ages 7-12 will be admitted for $5 each with a paying adult. Kids six years of age and under will be admitted free with a paying adult.
