The excitement is building as we near the 49th Whelen Season Opener featuring the first of six events for the Nascar Whelen Southern Modifieds at the speedway. Several drivers have been testing in preparation for the 150 Lap event including defending Champion George Brunnhoelzl III, Andy Seuss, Brian Loftin, the Myers brothers Burt & Jason, Kyle Ebersole and Rookie Joe Ryan Osborne.
A full field of Modifieds are expected to compete at the .455 mile asphalt oval, getting the series off to a good start. Seuss was pleased with his test stating “The car was very good, we’re hoping to pick up right where we left off. We were real happy with how the car responded even with the cold conditions and green track.” When asked whom he considered to be his toughest competitors in the series Seuss responded “There’s a lot of competition in the southern tour and a lot of new additions that have the potential to be a threat. We are just worried about the 11 car and doing the best every day to tune our car to the conditions for that day.” Seuss will be joined by teammate Steve Park for a limited schedule in the touring series.
The Nascar Late Model Stocks take to the track for 100 laps of action and Track Champion Ryan Wilson will be returning to his hometrack to defend his title. Wilson will also compete at two other tracks in NC and VA with a possible chance at three championship plus a possible National Championship. “I think racing at other tracks and racing on a more frequent basis will help us tremendously. To be able to be at the track almost every single weekend will be huge. Seat time is everything and the more you can race the better, therefore I think that it will help me a lot when I get back to Caraway. I’m really excited about getting back to Caraway and trying to get several wins this year and defend our championship.” Stated Wilson.
The 49th Whelen Season Opener gets underway Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Grandstand gate opens at 12 (Noon). Trackside parking opens at 8am for those you choose to tailgate. The Nascar Late Model Stocks take to the track first for 100 laps off action, followed by 25 Lap Legends, 150 Lap Nascar Whelen Southern Modified Tour, 30 Lap Limited Late Model, 15 Lap U-Car, 15 Lap Mini Stock and 15 Lap Hornets.
