On February 18, 2014, the Victory Lane Racing Association will present an award to the Historic Speedway Group (HSG) based in Hillsborough, NC, at its 9th annual award banquet during Daytona Week. The award will be given to the Historic Speedway Group for their dedication to preserve the Occoneechee/Orange Historic Speedway and the heritage of stock car racing. The banquet will be at the Pelican Bay Golf and Country Club in Daytona Beach, Florida. Buzz McKim, a well known historian of NASCAR, will be the Master of Ceremonies. Several members of Historic Speedway Group will be at the banquet to accept the special award including Frank Craig, one of the original founders of HSG and Gene Hobby, a former Grand National driver and current President of HSG.
Occoneechee/Orange Speedway was entered in the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 2002. The track was active from 1948 through 1968 with Bob Flock the winner of the first sanctioned NASCAR race and Richard Petty winning the last race.
A group of historic preservationists arranged the acquisition of the speedway property in 1997. The Historic Speedway Group formed in 2007 and the inaugural Celebration of the Automobile Car Show and Racers’ Reunion took place later that year. Since then thousands of fans have flocked to the renovated speedway each year to help celebrate the drivers and their classic race cars.
