Pulliam to fend off bounty hunters, add to national title hopes Saturday night
Aug 1, 2013 - updated Aug 1st, 2013 10:01pm
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, Va. --

Lee Pulliam can help enhance his NASCAR Whelen All American Series national championship hopes Saturday when South Boston Speedway hosts the Gazette-Virginia Late Model Twin 75’s racing program.

The first of five action-packed races at America’s Hometown Track will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday. All emergency services personnel will be admitted for the racing action Saturday night at the discounted price of $5 per person.

The featured attractions of the night will be a pair of 75-lap races for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

Pulliam, the winner of 11 events at South Boston Speedway this season, has recorded 17 overall triumphs for the campaign and owns an eight-point lead over Deac McCaskill in the chase for the 2013 NASCAR Whelen All American Series national championship. Pulliam is the defending national champion.

Saturday night at South Boston Speedway, a $1,000 bounty is being offered to anyone who can defeat Pulliam and halt his winning dominance at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

Prior to the event at America’s Hometown Track, South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice announced that a $500 bounty would be awarded to driver who could score a victory over Pulliam.

This weekend, the bounty will grow to $1,000 for the first 75-lap event, since Pulliam claimed a victory in his last outing.

Rice noted earlier that Pulliam must still be competing at the end of the race for a driver to claim the bounty, and she added that Pulliam can also claim the bounty if he elects to start from the rear of the field and attempt to work his way to the front to score his 12th victory of the campaign.

Bobby McCarty is in second place in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division standings at South Boston Speedway. He is 42 points ahead of Austin Thaxton. Dustin Storm is fourth in the standings and is just 10 points behind Thaxton. Former multi-time NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion Philip Morris rounds out the top five in the standings. He is six points behind Storm.

Other races scheduled Saturday night will be events for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and a race for the drivers in the touring Legendary Ford Flatheads Racing Association.

Danny Willis Jr. leads in the chase for the Limited Sportsman Division championship. Garrett Bunch is second in the standings. He is 16 points ahead of third-place Blake Stallings. Tommy Peregoy is in fourth place in the title chase. He is 13 points behind Stallings and seven points ahead of fifth-place Michael Maresca.

Joe Allred, who reeled off a pair of wins in his last outing at South Boston Speedway, owns a 32-point advantage over second-place Stuart Crews in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division standings. Austin Milam is third in the standings. He is 22 points behind Crews. Randy Hupp sits in fourth place in the standings. He is 12 points ahead of fifth-place Bruce Mayo.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 1 p.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Grandstand gates will open Saturday at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials to set the starting grids for the day of racing will roll off at 5:30 p.m.

Admission will be $10 for adults and children under the age of six will be admitted free with a paid adult.
