Loomis Winning Back Home At Cedar Lake

Bids For First NASCAR Finalist Division Track Title

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 4, 2013) — A 15-year racing veteran returned to his NASCAR Home Track this year to compete for a long-sought championship.

Mike Loomis, 42, of Columbus, Minn., is enjoying his NASCAR Whelen All-American Series homecoming. He posted his fourth win in five NASCAR Pro Stock starts Saturday night at Cedar Lake Speedway, a .375-mile banked clay oval in New Richmond, Wis.

“We started out this year just going to the races as usual, and swept the first three races,” Loomis said. “We’re a little surprised. I knew we were good at Cedar Lake. I didn’t know I was going to do this well this soon.”

Loomis returned to Cedar Lake after spending several years away racing at several tracks in the region.

“Cedar Lake Speedway is closest to home and it’s where my family, friends and sponsors are,” Loomis said. “It’s the premier track around here. It’s one of the best facilities.”

Pro Stocks are designated as NASCAR Finalist Division III at Cedar Lake Speedway. Loomis is 17th in Division III standings despite having half the starts as the division leaders. April weather delayed the track’s opening this year.

“We were snowed-out for the first month of the season,” Loomis said.

The NASCAR Finalist Division program recognizes drivers who compete in support divisions at NASCAR Whelen All-American Series tracks. With “Division I” being each track’s top division, the NASCAR Finalist Division line-up at each track highlights drivers competing in their second, third, fourth and fifth tier divisions. Through Sept. 15 a NASCAR-licensed driver’s best 14 finishes are counted toward their final point total for the year. Points are kept separately for dirt and asphalt tracks.

The top three dirt track NASCAR Finalist Division leaders in each division this week include Division II Mark Leiting, Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., and I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.; Chuck Schutz Jr., Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa.; Andy Wilkinson, Junction and I-80. Division III Jared Umbenhauer, Grandview; Craig Whitmoyer, Grandview; Brett Kressley, Grandview. Division IV Cody Clark, I-80 and Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa; Alex Heimer, Salina (Okla.) Highbanks Speedway; Vince Corbin, Cedar Lake. Division V Art Reed, Salina; Dylan Cantwell, Salina; Jim Walker Jr., Salina.

The top three asphalt track NASCAR Finalist Division leaders in each division this week include Division II Ricky Martin, Raceway Park in Shakopee, Minn.; Mack Little III, Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.; Zack Clifton, Bowman Gray. Division III John Ketron, Kingsport (Tenn.) Speedway; Jason Ketron, Kingsport; Doug Wall, Bowman Gray. Division IV Jeff Watkins II, Columbus (Ohio) Motor Speedway; Jeremy Menninger, Columbus; Terrance Robinson, Rockford (Ill.) Speedway. Division V Charlie Hooper, Greenville (S.C.) Pickens Speedway; M.J. Reed Jr., Lake County Speedway, Painesville, Ohio; Ray Mullinax, Greenville Pickens.

Loomis is a second generation driver at Cedar Lake. His dad Gary raced there through the mid-1980s.

“I’d go to the races every week with dad,” Loomis said.

Loomis began his own racing career in the late 1990s in the Street Stock division at Cedar Lake and won the track championship in 2001. He moved up to Pro Stocks in 2004.

He’s been a contender for the Pro Stock track championship, but the closest he’s gotten to the title was six points. He leads the current track standings by 100 over Cody Campeau.

“I seem to be a second-place in points guy,” Loomis said of his hapless luck. “I finish second in points just about every year.”

Loomis placed fourth in an event won by Dave Mass on June 13. It was the only Cedar Lake feature he hasn’t won this season.

He’s optimistic he’ll have the chance to break through to the title this year.

“I love it,” he said of his success so far. “We’re having a lot of fun.”

Loomis, an auto mechanic, is an owner-driver. His Chevy SS race car is based on a 2010 Lou Feger’s chassis and powered by a Scott’s Engine Shop motor. He credits a veteran crew chief Ray Robbins, 71, for a lot of his success. Sponsors include J&C Trucking, T&S Stucco, GRP Motorsports and Blacksmith Lounge. Loomis has three daughters, Marissa, 20, Ashley 18, and Micayla, 13.
