WEDNESDAY, JULY 3 at SoBo: Big races, big names, big money, big fireworks show
Jun 20, 2013 - updated Jun 20th, 2013 3:22pm
Web posted by Tim Chandler

SouthBoston, VA --

Wednesday, July 3 is a date short track racing fans in the area will certainly have circled on their calendars.

At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, the green flag will wave for the start of Dr. & Mrs. Maresca of St. Lawrence Radiology presents Sellers Construction 200 racing program.

Dr. & Mrs. Maresca of St. Lawrence Radiology presents Sellers Construction 200 will feature three big money races, the biggest names in the region in short track racing and a fireworks extravaganza at the close of the night.

The featured attraction of the night will be a 200-lap shootout for the competitors in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

Also scheduled as part of the night of racing will be a 100-lap race for the drivers in the Limited Sportsman Division, and a 50-lap shootout for the competitors in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

The night of racing will be preceded by a Fan Appreciation Session trackside at 5:30 p.m.

At the close of the evening, the annual South Boston Speedway Fireworks Extravaganza will be held and will once again light up the skies over the four-tenths mile asphalt oval with the best fireworks display in the area.

The 200-lap race for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division will also serve as the first event in the Virginia Late Model Triple Crown.

Once again this year, South Boston Speedway has teamed with Langley Speedway and Martinsville Speedway to offer the unique racing tripleheader.

The Virginia Late Model Triple Crown consists of the July 3 event at South Boston Speedway, the July 27 Hampton Heat 200 at Langley Speedway and the Virginia is for Lovers 300 on Oct. 6 at Martinsville Speedway.

In addition to the big-money purses at each of the three events, the driver with the highest point total among the three racers will win the Virginia Late Model Triple Crown title and an additional $5,000. The runner-up in the three-race point battle will receive $3,000, and the third-place driver will collect $1,500.

Former South Boston Speedway champion and current NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor will be among the drivers bidding for the Virginia Late Model Triple Crown title and the victory at South Boston Speedway on July 3.

Peters has raced in a pair of NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division races at America’s Hometown Track thus far this season and has scored a victory and a third-place finish.

“We’re going to give it a try,” Peters said. “I just love getting some seat time in the Late Model. That’s where I came from. It’s cool to go back there and race with some of the guys I used to race with. It’s always good to go back to your roots.”

Peters said he knows he will be facing a tough challenge July 3 at South Boston Speedway. Among the top names who will also be competing for the victory are defending NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion Lee Pulliam, and former national title winners Philip Morris and Peyton Sellers.

Morris is a multi-time NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion and Pulliam owns the top spot in the chase for the 2013 national title.

“It will be tough, that’s for sure,” Peters said. “We’ve been very lucky and fortunate this year to go to South Boston a couple of times and get a first and a third.”

Peters said he is grateful to his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series owners and crew at Red Horse Racing for allowing him the chance to gain the extra seat time in the Late Model Stock Car Division.

Peters also added that he was grateful to Barry Nelson and Autos by Nelson, along with Steve and Blake Stallings for their support of his Late Model Stock Car Division efforts.

“We’ve got a lot of great people who help make this possible,” Peters said. “They’re all a big help.”

Advance tickets for the St. Lawrence Radiology presents the Sellers Construction 200 are currently on sale and priced at $15 for adults. Advance tickets can be purchased by contacting South Boston Speedway office through Tuesday, July 2. Tickets on the day of the race will be priced at $20.

Pit registration will begin at 11 a.m. on July 3. Practice for all divisions will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 4 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 3:30 p.m. The racing action will get underway at 7 p.m.
