Newton, NC. --

June 15th, 2013

By:  Julie Buckner

Saturday, June 15th was Bojangles Church Night Presented by 321 Lawnmower with seven races on the schedule for the night.

Starting the night out was the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models for their first of two races.  The #12 of Austin McDaniel and the #8 of David Garbo led them to the green flag.  Caution would come out on lap three for debris.  On the restart the #95 of Michael Leavine and the #21 of Annabeth Barnes got together in turn four and the #77 of CJ Hulsey would spin in turn two.  The #5 of Christian Calvo would also sustain damage on the right front of his car.  The caution flag would come out again on lap nine after contact between the #25 of Matt Piercy and the #7 of Ashley Huffman in turn two.  Side by side racing would continue between several cars throughout the field.  At the checkered flag it would be McDaniel, Garbo, the #00 of Shane Lee, the #43 of Jesse LeFevers and Hulsey.

Next up would be the Gold King Super Trucks with the #16 of Clint Fields and the #33 of Jeremy Birch bringing them to the green flag.  Birch would assume the early lead with a battle between the #9 of Lee Queen and the #88 of Doug Barnes taking place behind him.  Fields would try to run down Birch, but was unable to do so.  Birch would take the win, followed by Fields, Queen, Barnes and the #29 of Jason Smith.

Starting on the pole for the Paramount KIA Limited Late Models would be the #51 of Jeremy Pelfrey with the #07 of Josh Bralley starting on the outside.  On lap eleven Bralley and the #15 of Sheflon Clay would make contact causing damage to Clay’s car and ending his night.  The second caution of the night would wave on lap nineteen for a spin by the #17 of Mitch Walker.  Close side by side racing would continue until lap 22 when the #95 of Nicholas Wilt would spin on the front stretch.  Pelfrey would lead them to the checkered flag, followed by the #75 of Landon Huffman, the #00 of Shane Lee, the #09 of Kyle Mansch and Bralley.

The #03 of Kevin Eby led the Street Stocks to the green flag with the #16 of Jonathon Smith starting second.  Eby would take the lead early in his backup car, while Smith and the #64 of Marshall Sutton would do battle for second.  On lap twenty-three Sutton would take second from Smith.  The caution would fly one more time on lap twenty-five as the #2 of Larry Mosher and the #5 of Donnie Harmon make contact in turn one.  At the finish is it Eby, Sutton, Jonathon Smith, the #99 of Roy Smith and the #33 of Mark Whitten.

If you want to see what used to race at Hickory Motor Speedway, the Sportsman Racing Classic is the division to watch.  They are a fun and exciting division to watch.  Starting on the pole would be the #48 of Larry Benz in a 1948 Chevrolet and starting second would be the #71 of Steve Davis in a 1969 Chevy Camaro.  Ken Webb (a former racer in this series) would wave the green flag to start the 25-lap feature.  Benz would take the lead early from Davis.  On lap fifteen Davis would regain the lead from Benz and take the checkered flag.  He would be followed by Benz, the #8 of Robert Hapeman, the #16 of  Bill Webb and the #2 of Don Fenn.

The second race for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models would begin with the  #5 of Christian Calvo on the pole and the #12 of Austin McDaniel, who won the first feature race, starting second.  At the green flag the #00 of Shane Lee would break loose causing the field to bunch up.  Lee would regain momentum and begin working his way thru the field.  It was Calvo who would assume the early lead after a door to door battle with the # 7 of Ashley Huffman. Lap fourteen the caution would wave again after the #8 of David Garbo and McDaniel make contact in turn one with McDaniel backing into the wall. A great battle would shape up with Calvo, the #7 of Ashley Huffman, the #43 of Jesse LeFevers closing in. Huffman would work his way to the top spot and lead. Caution would come out on lap thirty-five after the cars of Garbo and LeFevers make heavy contact on the front stretch taking them both out of competition.  The final caution of the night would come out when the #77 of CJ Hulsey and the #4 of Jack Madrid made contact in turn two sending both cars hard into the wall.  This would set up a green, white, checker battle between Huffman and Calvo.  The two would race side by side with Calvo edging out Huffman for the victory, followed by, the #25 of Matt Piercy, the #21 of Annabeth Barnes and the #00 of Shane Lee

The #8 of Kenneth Roberts started on the pole for the WrenchRags Renegades race with the #6 of Darren Dickinson starting second.  Roberts would lead flag to flag taking the win, with Dickinson second, the #16 of Carroll McKinney third, the #14 of Eddie Russ fourth and the #77 of Shawn Hayes fifth.
