Pulliam Makes it Two Out Of Three At SBS

Web posted by Tim Chandler

SouthBoston, VA --

South Boston, Va…..Defending NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Lee Pulliam fended off a late bid from Philip Morris on the final restart with 11 laps to go and won Saturday’s NASCAR Whelen Late Model 150 at South Boston Speedway.

Pulliam took the lead for the final time in the race on lap 91. Outside pole starter C.E. Falk, III of Virginia Beach, Va. took the lead from Pulliam on lap 88, right after the restart that followed the race’s fourth caution period of the day. Pulliam regained the lead when the engine in Falk’s car suddenly went sour two laps later, and held off Morris in the final 11-lap dash to the finish.

Pulliam’s margin of victory over Morris, the 2011 NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion, was .611-second.

The win in Saturday’s 150-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division race gives Pulliam wins in two of the season’s first three races at South Boston Speedway.

Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va. finished third, with Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, N.C. and Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.

Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C. finished sixth with defending South Boston Speedway NASCAR Whelen All American Series Champion Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Va., Dustin Storm of Huntingtown, Md., Ronald Hill of Rougemont, N.C. and Austin Thaxton of Cluster Springs, Va. rounding out the top ten finishers.

There were five lead changes in the race among three drivers, with Pulliam leading twice for a total of 69 laps. Falk led the most laps, leading three times for a total of 80 laps.

Pulliam averaged 62.913 mph in the race that was slowed by five caution flags.

            Willis Wins Limited Sportsman Race

Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. started on the outside pole, took the lead on the first lap and led the rest of the way to win Saturday’s 50-lap NASCAR Limited Sportsman Division race.

The race had its share of drama, with Willis having to hold off pole winner Joey Throckmorton of South Boston, Va. in a three-lap green-flag dash to the finish that followed the last of the race’s two caution flags.

Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill, N.C., Caleb Davis of Thaxton, Va., and Daniel Moss of  Danville, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.

            Allred Wins Pure Stock Race

Joe Allred, III of Scottsburg, Va. picked up his second win in as many starts this season with his win in the 30-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Allred took the lead on the opening lap, and with no caution flags to slow the race, drove to a 2.650-second win over runner-up Randy Hupp of Halifax, Va.

Stuart Crews of Long Island, Va., Austin Milam of Ringgold, Va. and Jake Brown of South Boston, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.

            Slayton Wins Modified Opener

Defending South Boston Speedway Modified Champion Hunter Slayton of Richmond, Va. got his 2013 season off to a good start by winning the 50-lap Modified race, the first race of the season for the division at South Boston Speedway.

Slayton edged runner-up Tanner Rumburg of Beaverdam, Va. by 1.577-second in a 36-lap dash to the finish that followed the race’s only caution period.

Chris Johnson of Richmond, Va., Chris Hoylman of Dinwiddie, Va. and Mike Johnson of Richmond, Va. completed the top five finishers.

Next Race At South Boston Speedway

Racing returns to South Boston Speedway on Saturday afternoon, March 30, with the Easter Bunny NASCAR Whelen Late Model 150 racing program.

The four-race program will be highlighted by a 150-lap race for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division. Races for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the competitors in the Legendary Ford Flatheads Racing Association will round out the afternoon’s action.

As an added treat, youngsters will have the opportunity to participate in an Easter Egg Hunt and visit with the Easter Bunny prior to the start of the afternoon’s first race.

Pit gates will open at 8 a.m. Practice will go from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon. Grandstand gates will open at 12 noon. Qualifying time trials will start at 12:45 p.m. and the first race will start at 2 p.m.

Adult general admission tickets are $10 each. Kids six years of age and under will be admitted free with a paying adult.
