VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY’S 2006 SEASON JUST AROUND THE CORNER
Mar 7, 2006 - updated Mar 7th, 2006 5:32pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, Va. --

Saluda, VA – The much anticipated, 2006 season is just around the corner for Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. Driver registrations are coming in at a record pace and Speedway officials expect a banner year for the ½ mile, high-banked clay oval speed plant.

The tentative 2006 schedule has been released and includes 24 weeks of Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship action starting with opening night April 1st and ending September 23rd with the 37th Annual Fall Classic. The Speedway will also hold an open practice for all divisions on Saturday, March 25th from 9am till 5pm. All cars must be registered and inspected before allowed to practice. Competitors are encouraged to register before the open practice.

Returning during the 2006 season will be the very successful Victory Lap Late Model $25K Challenge Series for steel head late models. The four race series will offer a bonus program for multiple wins. The Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge will once again pay a $5,000 bonus to anyone winning two of the four events with it going to $15,000 if a driver wins three of four events. And finally, if a driver sweeps all four events that driver would pick up a cool $25,000 bonus. Track rules for the Victory Lap Late Model Division will apply.

“The Victory Lap Challenge has continued to successfully grow over the last three seasons and we feel it is imperative to bring back the Challenge Series and give our steel head late models four premier events during the 2006 season,” commented Track Owner Bill Sawyer.

Tentative dates for the Victory Lap Late Model $25K Challenge Series are April 29th, June 10th, August 5th and September 2nd.

VMS will also hold four special events for the Super Late Models during the 2006 season. Tentatively scheduled are the World of Outlaws Late Model Series on April 8th to be taped for the Speed Channel, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on June 24th also in front of the SPEED Channel cameras and the MACS Series will once again return on August 19th. All three races will be $10,000 to win events.

New for the 2006 season will be the first time visit of the O’Reilly ASCS National Sprint Car Tour to be held Saturday, May 27th. Joining the sprint cars that night will be three of the tracks weekly transponder divisions.

“We are very excited to have Emmett Hahn’s O’Reilly ASCS National Sprint Car Tour visit our speedway for the first time. With Emmett’s reputation in the sprint car industry we are expecting great things,” commented VMS General Manager Clarke Sawyer.

Also new for 2006, is the addition of the Joe Weatherly Memorial for the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship Series to be held on Saturday July 15th. It will be the first time in 36 years that the national motorcycle tour has visited the state of Virginia.

Registrations are currently being accepted with all numbers being issued on a first come first served basis. Competitors can obtain a 2006 registration form by going to the tracks website or by calling the speedway Monday through Friday 10am through 3pm at (804) 758-1867.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway is a 1/2-mile, dirt oval. The track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads areas.

To learn more about Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway and its 2005 schedule of events, fans may call the Speedway office at (804) 758-1VMS or visit the track’s web site at www.vamotorspeedway.com.
