Morris Scores First Win Of Season In Gazette-Virginian 150

South Boston, Va….Philip Morris held off Josh Oakley of Rougemont, N.C. in a two-lap green-flag sprint to the finish to win Saturday night’s Gazette-Virginian NASCAR Whelen Late Model 150 here at South Boston Speedway.
The win was Morris’ first triumph of the season, and it came in his third start. He had finished second in both races of a Late Model Stock Car Division twinbill at South Boston Speedway on August 18.
Morris was holding a three-car length lead over Oakley when a mishap on lap 149 almost changed the complexion of the race. He and Oakley were approaching a pair of lapped cars when one of the lapped cars spun into the inside wall.
Unable to stop, Morris ran into the back of a lapped car in front of him, Oakley checked up, hit the outside wall, and Austin Thaxton and Peyton Sellers sped past Oakley. After the caution flag flew track NASCAR officials gave Oakley his position back.
Morris was able to maintain his lead on the ensuing restart on lap 155 and pulled away to edge Oakley by .640-second.
Thaxton, of South Boston, Va., finished third with Sellers, of Danville, Va., finishing fourth. Jeff Oakley of Prince George, Va. rounded out the top five finishers in the 21-car field.
South Boston Speedway points leader Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Va., Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Va., Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va., Eric Winslow of Danville, Va. and Quin Houff rounded out the top ten finishers.
The race was a competitive one with two lead changes among three drivers. Morris took the lead from Sellers on lap 12 and led the final 146 circuits of the race that went 157 laps to accommodate a two-lap green flag run at the end.
Morris averaged 64.616 mph in the race that was slowed by five caution flags that consumed a total of 31 laps.
McCarty Wins Limited Sportsman Race
Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C. padded his points lead Saturday night by scoring a flag-to-flag win in the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race. The win was his seventh of the season at South Boston Speedway.
McCarty held a 16-point edge over defending division champion Danny Willis, Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. entering the race and gained seven more points over Willis, who finished second in the race.
Blake Stallings of Danville, Va. finished third with Michael Maresca of Hannawa Falls, N.Y. and Mike Jones of South Boston, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.
Nathan Crews, Trey Crews Split Pure Stock Division Twinbill
Nathan Crews of Long Island, Va. and Trey Crews of Halifax, Va. split wins in Saturday night’s pair of 30-lap races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.
The win for Nathan Crews in the first 30-lap race was his second win of the season. The win for Trey Crews in the nightcap was his fourth of the season and it extended his lead in the chase for the division points championship.
Joe Allred, III of Scottsburg, Va., who entered the night as Trey Crews’ chief challenger for the championship, finished second in the first race but finished 13th in the second race after encountering mechanical problems with his car.
Trey Crews finished third in the first race with Stuart Crews of Long Island, Va. and Daniel Crews of Long Island, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.
Daniel Crews finished second in the second race, with Randy Hupp of Halifax, Va., Stuart Crews and Justin Tucker of Elon, N.C. rounding out the top five finishers.
