Pulliam Sweeps Twinbill at SBS 8-18-12

South Boston, Va --

Lee Pulliam bolstered his bid for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship with a sweep of the twin 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division races Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

The wins came in full-field events and pushed his season win total to 20 victories. Nine of the wins have come at South Boston Speedway with 11 starts.

Pulliam topped 2011 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Champion and South Boston Speedway champion Philip Morris of Ruckersville, Va. in both races. Morris, who was making his first starts of the season with his own car, finished 4.551 seconds behind Pulliam in the first race, with Pulliam winning the nightcap by a margin of 1.218 second.

Pulliam started third in the first race, and took the lead from pole winner Jeb Burton of Halifax, Va. on lap 41. With no caution periods to slow him down after that point, Pulliam pulled away from the field to post his first win of the night.

Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va. finished third in the first race, with Austin Thaxton of South Boston, Va. and Burton rounding out the top five finishers.

Pulliam started fifth in the nightcap as a result of a drawing for an inverted start, and had to battle Morris for the top spot. The pair traded paint while battling for the lead, with Pulliam forging ahead of Morris on lap 32.

Once in the lead, Pulliam gradually built his advantage and sped to his second win of the night.

Thaxton finished third in the nightcap, with Sellers and track points leader Matt Bowling of Ridgeway rounding out the top five finishers.

            Grissom Wins PASS South 150

PASS South Super Late Model Series points leader Kyle Grissom padded his series points lead Saturday night by winning the night’s 150-lap race for the touring circuit.

Grissom, the son of former NASCAR Busch Series National Champion Steve Grissom, started ninth and drove his way through the field to take the lead from Nate Caruth on the 88th lap, two laps after the restart following the race’s second caution period.

Despite five more caution periods for mishaps, Grissom held on to edge the fast-closing Caruth by .211-second, or approximately two car lengths.

Jody Lavender finished third with young Gray Gaulding of Charlotte, N.C., and veteran Preston Peltier of Harrisburg, N.C. rounding out the top five finishers.

The win was Grissom’s fourth of the season in 10 starts in the Super Late Model series and makes him the leading winner in the series this season.

The race was a competitive one with five lead changes among five different drivers.

Grissom averaged 50.825 mph in the race that took one hour 10 minutes and 49 seconds to complete.

            Grala Wins Legends Cars Race

Kaz Grala of Boston, Mass. Started on the pole and scored a flag-to-flag win in the night’s 25-lap Legends Cars race. The win was Grala’s seventh of the season.

David Garbo Jr. of Stonington, Conn. finished second, with Brad Hancock of Newport News, Va. rounding out the top three finishers.

Eighteen cars started the race.
