NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
at Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA
Preview: Late Model twinbill tops Saturday's 6-race slate
Wednesday, August 8, 2012

HAMPTON, Va. (Aug. 8) Twin 50-lap features for the EZ Auto in Newport News Late Model Stock Cars top the bill this Saturday, Aug. 11, as Langley Speedway continues its NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign with Langley Federal Credit Union Night, the land-based portion of Hampton SpeedWeek 2012.
In addition to the Late Model doubleheader, Saturday's lineup includes: Larry King Law Super Trucks (25 laps); SavitaPets.com UCARs (25 laps); Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps); and, Cook's Moving Service Enduros (40 laps).
Front gates open and afternoon practice rounds get under way at 2 p.m. The drivers meeting is scheduled for 4:15, followed by time trials at 4:30. Pre-race activities begin at 6:55, while the Champ Karters lead off the evening's feature slate shortly after 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Military personnel (active-duty or retired) and seniors (60+) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Family Packs, which include two adult and two kids tickets, are $25 a savings of $5.
Advance tickets may be purchased in the Speedway office during normal business hours or through the track's Web site <www.langley-speedway.com>.

Entering Saturday's twinbill, Greg Edwards owns a commanding 22-point advantage over Wes Falk in the Late Model championship chase, 290-268. Casey Wyatt is third, 44 out of the lead after a premature exit from the July 28 Hampton Heat 200. Shayne Lockhart is fourth, just one behind Wyatt. Despite being disqualified from two races on May 19, seven-time race winner C.E. Falk has clambered back into fifth, only four points out of third place.

Robbie Davis will be gunning for his seventh victory when the Super Trucks hit the track for this weekend's 25-lapper. Davis leads two-time race winner Troy Turnage by 14 in the current points rundown, 231-217. Last season's division champ, Tommy Nixon, is third, 20 out of first place. Chris Bechtel and Chase McAdams round out the top five.

In the UCAR class, Bill Eaker has opened an eight-point gap over Jon Largena, 182-174. Sammy Gaita is third in the standings, followed by Tim Wilson and Landon Abbott. Rookie Jason Michaud notched his first victory the last time out, on July 28, and will try to back up that win in Saturday's 25-lap race.

The HRKC Champ Karts will see their first action in nearly a month and a half when they kick off this Saturday's program. Charlie-Ray Lorah, winner of three of the six races this season, leads Aaron Leach by 30 points in the rankings, 151-121. Matthew Dail is third, one behind Aaron Leach, followed by Matthew Leach and Sparky West.

Alex Floroff will try to extend his three-race winning streak in the Enduro feature, the final event on Saturday's card. Floroff is 11 points ahead of Larry Drommerhausen in the current standings, 128-117. Derrick Boggess is third, three behind Drommerhausen, while two-time race winner Richard Quinn is fourth. Robert Larkin completes the top five.

Lee Pulliam, Keith Rocco and C.E. Falk retained the top three spots in this week's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national 500. For better or worse, all three drivers had eventful weeks.
Pulliam swept Twin 100s at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., for his 16th and 17th wins in 25 starts. Rocco, meanwhile, was injured while practicing his Modified at Thompson International Speedway in Connecticut, putting him on the sidelines for the weekend.
Falk, continuing to lay the groundwork for a move up the NASCAR ladder, made his third start of the season in last Saturday's Camping World Truck Series event at the 2.5-mile Pocono Speedway. Falk fared well on the challenging triangle, coming home in 16th place.
Behind the front three, Northeastern Modified pilot Ted Christopher and Late Model standout Nate Monteith swapped the fourth position again. Christopher moved up, while Monteith was rained out at Kingsport Speedway in Tennessee.
Other drivers of local interest in the top 500 include: Hampton Heat 200 winner Matt Bowling (14th); Greg Edwards (70th); Wes Falk (121st); Mark Wertz (172nd); Casey Wyatt (189th); Shayne Lockhart (211th); Terry Carroll (244th); Danny Edwards Jr. (272nd); Jeff Shiflett (299th); Duane Shreeves (410th); and, J.T. Jackson (457th).
In the Virginia state standings, Pulliam and C.E. Falk are 1-2, followed by Bowling, Tommy Lemons Jr. and Josh Berry. Greg Edwards is eighth, while Wes Falk ranks 12th. Wyatt and Wertz are 15th and 16th, respectively, while Lockhart checks in at 18th.

It's not often that Langley Speedway isn't the venue for the fastest entertainment in Hampton Roads. The stock car crowd will take a back seat this weekend, though, as the 87th Hampton Cup Regatta cranks up on a 1.5-mile course on Mill Creek, between Fort Monroe and the East Mercury Blvd. Bridge.
Billed as "The Oldest Continuously Run Motorsports Event In The World," the Hampton Cup Regatta will feature 10 classes of boats with speeds ranging from 80 to 170 mph.
The shindig gets under way on Friday, Aug. 10, with the "Bash on the Beach," to be held at the Paradise Ocean Club at Fort Monroe. The band Excess headlines the festivities.
Races are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. While admission is free, tickets will be available for a "Premium Viewing Area" on the East Mercury Blvd. Bridge.
For more information about the Hampton Cup Regatta, the waterborne half of Hampton SpeedWeek 2012, visit the event's Web site, <www.HamptonCupRegatta.com>.

Langley's Standard Welding Pro Six division received feature-story treatment in this month's issue of Late Model Racer magazine. The piece, authored by Chris Romano, includes comments from Steve Williams, Casey Sipe, David Butler, Nelson Moody and Bobby Hall.
Whether a driver plans to make a long-term home in the division or to use it as a bridge between entry-level classes and Late Models, the consensus was that the cars are relatively affordable and a ton of fun to drive.
The Pro Sixes return to action at Langley on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Six races, highlighted by Twin 75s for the EZ Auto in Newport News Late Models and Twin 30s for the KeesVacations.com Modifieds, are planned for Saturday, Aug. 18, when NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway. The Pepsi Grand Stocks and Heritage Motor Co. Super Streets round out the evening's feature slate.
With the beginning of a new school year in the offing, Aug. 18 will be "Stuff the Bus" Night. Fans are encouraged to help fill the "Boogity-Boogity-Boogity Bus," the track's unique hot rod, with backpacks and other school supplies. The donated items will be distributed to children in Hampton and Newport News, as well as Appalachia.
