Oakley takes first-ever Late Model win at South Boston

Josh Oakley had come close to winning a NASCAR Whelen Late Model race at South Boston Speedway before Saturday night’s American National presents Charles Anderson Lawn Care 150.

This time the Rougemont, N.C. driver finished the deal, passing pole sitter Austin Thaxton on lap 64 and steadily pulling away to win by 12.260 seconds and become the eighth different NASCAR Whelen Late Model winner at South Boston this season.

Thaxton, of South Boston finished second ahead of Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, who maintained his points lead in the division with his third-place finish.

Darrell Gilchrist of Raleigh, N.C., finished fourth, and Dennis Holdren of Roanoke took home a fifth-place finish in a race that was delayed only once by a caution.

Thaxton won his third pole of the year with a time of 15.818 seconds (91.036 mph), and was the only other driver to lead a lap during the race.

 

Willis, Peregoy split Limited Sportsman wins

Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs and Tommy Peregoy of Clarksville split wins in 50-lap twin races for the Limited Sportsman Division, Willis passing pole sitter Peregoy on the opening lap of race one and leading the rest of the way to win by 1.367 seconds over the Clarksville driver.

Points leader Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C., finished third ahead of South Boston driver Mike Jones, with Michael Maresca of Hannawa Falls, N.Y., finishing in fifth-place, in a race that was delayed once by a caution.

Peregoy collected his first win of the season in the second 50-lap race, passing race leader McCarty on lap 47 and winning by 0.309 seconds over Willis, with McCarty finishing third, Maresca fourth and Jones fifth.

The second Limited Sportsman race featured three lead changes, with Jones passing pole sitter Maresca on lap three, McCarty leading laps 23-46 after passing Jones and Peregoy leading the last three laps, in a race that was delayed once by a caution flag.

Peregoy captured his first pole of the year for race one with a time of 16.209 seconds (88.840 mph).

 

Nathan Crews wins Pure Stock race

Nathan Crews of Long Island won his third pole of the season and followed it up with a win in the 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock race.

Trey Crews of Halifax took over the Pure Stock points lead with his second-place finish, ahead of Halifax driver Randy Hupp and Halifax driver Bruce Mayo.

Nathan Crews won the pole with a time of 18.134 seconds (79.409 mph) and led every lap of a race that was marred by four cautions, winning by 1.962 seconds.

 

Ricketts takes win in Legendary Flathead race

Garland Ricketts of South Boston won the 20-lap race for the Legendary Flatheads, ahead of Henry Barboss and Harry Hale.

Ricketts also was the winner of the Modified class, while Hale was the Sportsman Class winner.

 

 

Next race at South Boston Speedway

Racing action will return to South Boston Speedway on Saturday, August 18, with the PASS Super Late Model 150.

The event, which will get the green flag at 7 p.m., will be headlined by a 150-lap race for the stars and cars of the PASS South Super Late Model Series. Twin 75-lap races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars will share the spotlight with the PASS South race. A race for Legends Cars will round out the night’s action.

Advance adult general admission tickets are priced at $10 each and will be available until 5 p.m. Friday, August 17. Adult general admission tickets on race day are priced at $15 each. Youth ages 7-12 will be admitted for $5 when accompanied by a paying adult. Kids ages six and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
