Pulliam Pockets Big Money At SBS

South Boston, Va --

Lee Pulliam pocketed his biggest payday of the season here Tuesday night, picking up a $5,000 prize for winning Tuesday night’s FindItHere.com NASCAR Whelen Late Model 200 at South Boston Speedway.

Driving a Chevrolet, Pulliam drove away from the field in an 82-lap green-flag run to the finish and edged runner up C.E. Falk, III of Virginia Beach, Va. by 3.550 seconds or about a quarter of a lap to score his fifth win of the season here and his eighth win overall.

Brandon Butler of Sutherland, Va. finished third with Austin Thaxton of South Boston, Va. and Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.

Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Va., the points leader in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division at South Boston Speedway, finished sixth, with Ronald Hill of Rougemont, N.C., Jeb Burton of Halifax, Va., Austin Self of Austin, Tex., and Jeff Oakley of Prince George, Va. rounding out the top ten finishers.

Pulliam led every lap of the 200-lap NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division, the longest and richest race remaining on South Boston Speedway’s 2012 season schedule.

Falk got as close as a half a dozen car lengths with 40 laps to go in the race, but Pulliam was able to pull away over the final 25 laps to handily secure the win.

Pulliam averaged an event record 82.574 mph in the race that took 58 minutes and seven seconds to complete.

One caution flag slowed the race for five laps.

Stallings wins Limited Sportsman Division race

Blake Stallings of Danville, Va. held off Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. in a two-lap green flag dash to the finish that followed the race’s last caution period to score his first career Limited Sportsman Division win in Tuesday night’s 100-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

The race was initially a battle between defending division champion Danny Willis, Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. and division points leader Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C. Following the race’s first caution period, the two drivers treated fans to an intense side-by-side battle that lasted for about 20 laps, with the pair swapping the lead seven times during the race. The battle ended when the pair made contact and spun in the first turn with eight laps left in the race.

The incident put Stallings in the lead and side-by-side with Peregoy for the double-file restart with three laps to go. But, another caution created a final restart on lap 103, with Stallings edging Peregoy in the subsequent green-white-checkered run to the finish.

Michael Maresca of Hannawah Falls, N.Y. finished third with Mike Jones of South Boston, Va. and Willis rounding out the top five finishers. McCarty finished eighth in the final rundown in the longest and richest race of the season for the division at South Boston Speedway.

The race was slowed by three caution periods that consumed a total of 24 laps.

Watkins Wins Pure Stock Division Race

Chuck Watkins of Creedmoor, N.C. scored his first win at South Boston Speedway in two and a half years Tuesday night, topping an 18-car field to win the 50-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Watkins took the lead after frontrunners Trey Crews of Halifax, Va. and Nathan Crews of Long Island, Va. tangled, and led the final 10 laps to pick up the win.

Defending division champion Joe Allred, III of Scottsburg, Va. finished second, .458-second behind the winner, with Randy Hupp of Halifax, Va., Stuart Crews of Long Island, Va. and Bruce Mayo of Halifax, Va. rounding out the top five finishers in the longest and richest race of the season for the division at South Boston Speedway.
