Ted Christopher Enters Carquest Fall Final Weekend At Stafford With Sights Set On Winning First Career Championship

(Stafford Springs, CT)---As the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour rolls into Stafford Motor Speedway for the CARQUEST Fall Final 150, Ted Christopher finds himself in the unfamiliar position of sitting atop the points standings with only three races left on the 2005 schedule. Christopher enters the CARQUEST Fall Final on a hot streak, winner of the last three Whelen Modified Tour races at New Hampshire, Thompson, and Martinsville, and he leads 4-time Whelen Modified Tour champion Tony Hirschman by 61 points.

“We definitely have momentum on our side with three wins in a row,” said Christopher. “I don’t care who you are or what you’re racing, when you get beat three races in a row, it has to put a damper on things. But 60 points isn’t a lot and anything can happen, but I’d much rather be ahead by 60 points than be behind by 60 points.” After the CARQUEST Fall Final, the WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR will close out the 2005 season and the championship chase with two races at Thompson, a track that both Christopher and Hirschman historically do well at. “I’ve won at Stafford and Thompson, and Tony has won at Stafford and Thompson, said Christopher. “We’ve both run well at both of those tracks, so anything can happen. The guys on the team have been preparing the cars well, the cars are driving like I like them to, and we’ve been having real good pit stops. We finished second and first the last two races at Stafford, so I’m looking forward to this weekend.” While Hirschman has won four WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR championships, and Christopher has yet to win a Whelen Modified Tour championship, Christopher finished second in the 2002 WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR points standings, and has won numerous track championships at the local racing level. “Tony definitely knows how to win a championship, but I’ve been fortunate enough to have won championships in the past, so I don’t think there’s much difference there,” said Christopher. “Three years ago, we led more laps than anyone, won more races than anyone, and won more poles than anyone, we just had some breakage in a couple races, and we came up about 50 points short because we didn’t finish a couple races. That’s been the difference for us this year. When I have a car that can win, I want to win the race. If the car isn’t capable of winning, then I’m not pushing the car as hard to try to win.” With nearly 100 career victories at Stafford, and 5 career WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR wins at SMS, Christopher and his team have a good inkling of what it will take to return to victory lane at the conclusion of the CARQUEST Fall Final 150. “We’ve been good the last two races at Stafford,” said Christopher. “We were off a little with our chassis the last race, and that’s why we finished second. But we have a good baseline to work off, we just need to have a good pit stop and let things play out at the end and see what happens.” With all Christopher has accomplished in his long career, a Whelen Modified Tour championship would rank right at the top of his list of accomplishments and accolades. “Winning the Tour championship would definitely be right up there,” said Christopher. “To win a championship in anything, whether it’s an SK at Stafford, Thompson, or Waterford, or the Tour championship, it’s a big deal. To win the Tour championship would be even bigger because that’s what everyone around here shoots for when they run the Tour.” Christopher has already set a career high for wins in a season with 7 victories this year, and he will be gunning for win number eight and the maximum amount of points that go with a victory this Sunday, while Hirschman will be shooting for his fifth win of the 2005 season.

With Christopher recording a win and a second place finish in the last two Stafford races, and Hirschman posting a win or second place finish in 7 of the last 8 Stafford races, you can be sure that both drivers will be near the front of the field battling for the victory and the championship this weekend. The 33rd annual CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend kicks off on Friday, September 30th with a practice session for SK Modified®, Late Model, Limited Late Model and DARE Stock teams. The practice will run from 2pm to 6:30pm, and the grandstand gates will be open to the public at no charge. The CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend continues on Saturday, October 1st with spectator gates opening at 10am. Saturday’s action will see qualifying for the Whelen Modified Tour cars, where current NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Steve Park will attempt to qualify for the CARQUEST 150 in a Mystique Motorsports Chevrolet, heat and consolation races for Stafford’s SK Modified®, Late Model, Limited Late Model, and DARE Stock teams, and feature events for Stafford’s Limited Late Model and DARE Stock divisions. The CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend will conclude on Sunday, October 2nd. Spectator gates will open at 10am, with the CARQUEST Tech-Net Pit Party starting at 11am and going to 12 noon. Feature events will start at 1pm, with the SK Modified® 50-lap feature first on the track. Following the SK Modifieds® will be the WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR CARQUEST 150, the 40-lap Late Model feature, and the 12-lap Paradiso-Muska DARE Stock Shoot-Out. Tickets for the 33rd annual CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend are on sale now at the Speedway Box Office.
