Preview: Military salute slated for this Saturday
Thursday, May 17, 2012
HAMPTON, Va. (May 17) This Saturday, May 19, is Armed Forces Day and Langley Speedway will pay tribute to the significant role that service members play in the Hampton Roads community when it hosts Military Appreciation Night presented by the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Daily Press.
Saturday's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series lineup includes: EZ Auto in Newport News Late Model Stock Cars (Twin 50s); Pepsi Grand Stocks (40 laps); Larry King Law Super Trucks (25 laps); SavitaPets.com UCARs (25 laps); and, Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Front gates open and afternoon practice rounds get under way at 2 p.m. As they enter the Speedway, fans will be greeted by an assortment military vehicles on display. The drivers meeting is scheduled for 4:15 and time trials start at 4:30. Pre-race festivities, featuring a planned flyover, begin at 6:30, while the Champ Karters kick off the evening's racing program shortly after 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Military personnel (active-duty or retired) and seniors (60+) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. Little Race Fans (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Family Packs, which include two adult and two kids tickets, are $25 a savings of $5.
Advance tickets may be purchased in the Speedway office during normal business hours or through the track's Web site <www.langley-speedway.com>.
For years, men and women in uniform have consistently made up a sizable portion of Langley's weekly fan base. And, their presence will be even more pronounced this Saturday as the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has distributed 3,000 tickets to service members and their families.

As if Late Model title contenders needed any extra incentive, the first of Saturday's Twin 50s will also be a battle for the Chamber of Commerce Commander's Cup.
Prior to the race, the top five drivers in the current standings C.E. Falk, Greg Edwards, Casey Wyatt, Mark Wertz and Shayne Lockhart will each draw a coin to see which of the five service branches they'll be representing. The highest finisher among the five will claim the Cup, which will reside at the winner's base for the next year.
