South Boston, Va --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lee Pulliam returned to NASCAR racing here Saturday night in the WYYD Presents USG Night Late Model 150 and made his return a big one.

Pulliam, from Semora, N.C., racing on a NASCAR track for the first time since being suspended from NASCAR in late October of 2011, won Saturday night’s 150-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division race here at the .4-mile oval.

He got a good jump on a restart with 14 laps to go that followed the race’s fifth caution period and pulled away, scoring a 1.055-second win over former NASCAR national champion and former South Boston Speedway champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va.

Track points leader, Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Va. finished third, with Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, N.C. and South Boston, Va. resident Bruce Anderson rounding out the top five finishers.

Ronald Hill of Rougemont, N.C. finished sixth with Josh Oakley of Rougemont, N.C., Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Va., Matt Waltz of Newport News, Va. and Jesse Little of Sherrill’s Ford, N.C. rounding out the top ten finishers.

With the win, Pulliam became the fourth different winner in as many points races this season at South Boston Speedway and the fifth different winner in as many races this season.

Pulliam led all 150 laps of the race and won the pole in pre-race qualifying time trials. He averaged 57.204 mph in the race that took one hour, two minutes and 56 seconds to complete.

Willis sweeps Limited Sportsman Division twinbill

Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. took over the points lead in the Limited Sportsman Division by virtue of his sweep of the night’s pair of 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division races.

Willis edged Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C. in winning both races, winning the first race after a hard-fought contact-filled battle with McCarty through two restarts in the final four laps, and then driving away to a 3.08-second win over McCarty in the nightcap in a 19-lap green-flag dash to the finish.

Willis and McCarty swapped the lead twice in the first race, with Willis leading the last four laps. In the nightcap, Willis took the lead from Jones on the third lap and led the rest of the way.

Mike Jones of South Boston, Va. finished third in both races and Blake Stallings of Danville, Va. earned fourth-place finishes in both races. Chris Crosby of Raleigh, N.C. rounded out the top five finishers in the first race. Daniel Moss of Danville, Va. took fifth place in the second race.

Allred takes win in Pure Stock action

Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, Va. won the night’s 30-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division. It was the third win in as many races for the defending division champion.

Courtney Crosby of Scottsburg, Va. finished second, trailing Allred by .738-second in a four-lap dash to the finish that followed the last of the race’s two caution periods.

Randy Hupp of Halifax. Va. finished third with Trey Crews of Halifax, Va. and Stuart Crews of Long Island, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.

Slayton sweeps MAD Modified Division twinbill

Hunter Slayton of Richmond, Va. proved Saturday night he still has the hot hand in the MAD (Modified Affordable Division) Modified Division at South Boston Speedway.

Slayton swept the twin races for the division to give himself four straight wins at South Boston Speedway this season.

He took the lead from Michael Johnson with six laps to go enroute to his win in the first race. In the nightcap, which was shortened to 15 laps, Slayton took the lead from Jimmy Humblet of Shiloh, N.C. with five laps to go and sped away to the win.

Johnson finished second in the first race, with Humblet taking third place. Kyle Wood of Powhatan, Va. finished third behind Slayton and Humblet in the nightcap.

            Spec Miata Series makes debut

Estus White of Kannapolis, N.C. took the lead from Tyler Cooke of Charlotte, N.C. with two laps to go and held on to win a 25-lap exhibition race for the Spec Miata Oval racing Series.

The series is open to NASA and SCCA Spec Miata cars and Saturday night’s race for the series at South Boston Speedway was the first of its kind in the world.

Mark Canup of Zebulon, N.C. finished third in the race.
