South Boston, Va --
After a three-week break, South Boston Speedway will return to action Saturday night for the running of the WYYD presents USG Night Late Model racing program.
Highlighting the night of action-packed racing will be a 150-lap battle for the drivers in the highly competitive NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.
The Late Model Stock Car action at America’s Hometown Track in 2012 has been intense with three different drivers — Darrell Gilchrist, Matt Bowling and Deac McCaskill — scoring victories in the opening three point races of the campaign.
Bowling is the leader in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car point standings; however, he has only a three-point cushion over Peyton Sellers, a former national champion and South Boston Speedway title winner.
Also scheduled as part of the WYYD presents USG Night Late Model 150 racing program will be twin races for the Limited Sportsman Division, a pair of events for the touring MAD (Modified Affordable Division) Modifieds, an event for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the debut of the Spec Miata Oval Racing Series.
Bobby McCarty is the leader in the Limited Sportsman Division standings by seven points over Danny Willis Jr. and by nine over Mike Jones.
Joe Allred sits atop the standings in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, while Stuart Crews and Courtney Crosby are currently tied for second.
The Spec Miata Oval Racing Series event is open to all NASA and SCCA Spec Miata cars, and both Hoosier and SM6 and Toyo RA1 spec tires will be allowed for the event. Saturday’s race for the Spec Miata Oval Racing Series at South Boston Speedway will be the first of its kind in the world.
Speedway officials are hoping Saturday’s event at South Boston Speedway will spark enough interest to host a second event in the fall and then hopefully even more races in the 2013 campaign.
Pit registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be $10 for adults and children six and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.
