Spec Miata Oval Racing Series will make SoBo debut during Saturday’s WYYD presents USG Night Late Model 150 racing program

South Boston, Va --

Race fans will be treated to a special 25-lap exhibition race for the new Spec Miata Oval Racing Series Saturday night, May 5, when South Boston Speedway returns to action for the running of the WYYD presents USG Night Late Model racing program.

The Spec Miata Oval Racing Series event is open to all NASA and SCCA Spec Miata cars, and both Hoosier and SM6 and Toyo RA1 spec tires will be allowed for the event. Saturday’s race for the Spec Miata Oval Racing Series at South Boston Speedway will be the first of its kind in the world.

The 25-lap Spec Miata Oval Racing Series event will be part of an action-packed night of racing, which will get cranked up at 7 p.m. and will be highlighted by a 150-lap race for the competitors in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Mode Stock Car Division.

Also scheduled as part of the WYYD presents USG Night Late Model 150 racing program will be twin races for the Limited Sportsman Division, a pair of events for the touring MAD (Modified Affordable Division) Modifieds and a battle for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Long Road Racing owner Glenn Long, who is helping to promote the Spec Miata Oval Racing Series event at America’s Hometown Track, said the race will be a “unique experience for road racers.”

“It’s a fun way to maximize your investment,” Long said. “Racers who have bought a Spec Miata can now get more use out of their car and enjoy it in a unique way.”

Long added that there is a lot of excitement among Spec Miata Oval Racing Series competitors heading into Saturday’s exhibition.

South Boston Speedway COO/Executive Vice President Nick Igdalsky developed the idea of having the Spec Miata Oval Racing Series compete at the historic four-tenths mile after his time behind the wheel of a Mazda road racer.

“Spec Miata owners are road racers, but they live for competition,” Igdalsky said. “This is a new kind of competition they can do with the same car, the same tires and virtually the same setup.”

Igdalsky is hoping Saturday’s event at South Boston Speedway will spark enough interest to host a second event in the fall and then hopefully even more races in the 2013 campaign.

When the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division competitors take the track for their 150-lap event Saturday night, there will be no clear-cut favorite among the highly talented field.

Through the initial three point races of the 2012 campaign, there have been three different winners in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division — Darrell Gilchrist, Matt Bowling and Deac McCaskill.

Bowling currently leads the division’s point standings in the early stages. Gilchrist is second and leads Peyton Sellers, a former national champion and South Boston Speedway title winner, by only three points.

Bobby McCarty is the leader in the Limited Sportsman Division standings by seven points over Danny Willis Jr. and by nine over Mike Jones.

Joe Allred sits atop the standings in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, while Stuart Crews and Courtney Crosby are currently tied for second.

Pit registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. on May 5. Practice for all divisions will be held from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be $10 for adults and children ages six and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.

For more information visit the track's website or phone the track at (434) 572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540.
