Southern Mods Make First Of Two Visits To Virginia

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - While he enters this weekend's South Boston 150 tied with Brian Loftin for the points lead, one thing is obvious - defending NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion George Brunnhoelzl III will have his work cut out for him if he wants to be the first driver to repeat as champion since Junior Miller accomplished the feat in 2005-2006.
As the Whelen Southern Modified Tour returns to South Boston on Saturday, April 14, one of the big questions will be whether Brunnhoelzl become the first driver to collect his second win at South Boston, or if Loftin can ride his momentum from his Caraway win and pick up his first win in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Loftin, the 2008 tour champion, is as confident as he has ever been entering the South Boston 150.
"It feels good knowing you have a car each week capable of running up front and my crew works hard to give me a great ride each race," Loftin said. "After all I have been through over the past year getting back in Victory Lane is special. Hopefully this will be the first of many more wins this season."
Loftin was the first driver other than Brunnhoelzl or Andy Seuss to win a race at Caraway in the past six events and if he wants to keep the Ideal Racing teammates from picking up a win at South Boston, he knows he will have to keep the duo in his rear view mirror. But he is not alone.
Tim Brown has had a fast car in both previous 2012 events and hopes to be able to close the deal this weekend at South Boston. Brown, who broke the track qualifying record at Caraway last week and ran in the top five most of the night until he was forced to pit while in the top 10, has the best average finish of any driver who has started all three previous races at South Boston.
Brown has a pair of fourth-place finishes and a sixth-place showing on his resume and will once again drive for Virginia natives Tommy and Connie Lythgoe's T&C Motorsports this weekend.
Also in the mix is L.W. Miller and both Burt and Jason Myers, which should make this weekend's race one of the most exciting in the tour's history at the speedway.

Race Notes

Familiar Ground: The South Boston 150 marks the first of two races for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour scheduled at in Virginia in 2012. Langley Speedway will host the modifieds on Labor Day weekend.
Loftin Joins Brunnhoelzl With Ticket To Daytona:  By winning the Farm Bureau Insurance 150 on April 7 at Caraway Speedway, Brian Loftin joined George Brunnhoelzl III in becoming the second NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour competitor locked into the inaugural UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February 2013. Each eligible race winner throughout the season from the Whelen Modified and Whelen Southern Modified Tours will earn guaranteed starting positions for the combined Whelen Modified exhibition feature on the short track at Daytona.
Rookies Move Up Leaderboard:  This year's seven Sunoco Rookie of the Year contenders continue to gain recognition as a pair once again finished in the top 10 at Caraway last week. Danny Bohn, in just his second start, finished fifth while Daniel Hemric finished third for his second consecutive Sunoco Rookie of the Race award.
