6 titles to be decided on "Championship Saturday"
Oct 20, 2011 - updated Oct 20th, 2011 6:49pm

Hampton Va. --

Thursday, October 20, 2011

For six drivers, the long and arduous journey to a division title will come to a fruitful conclusion on Oct. 22 as Langley Speedway closes out its 2011 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule with Waypoint Apartments "Championship Saturday."
This weekend's nine-race feature lineup includes: Pepsi Grand Stocks (Twin 20s); Heritage Motor Co. Super Streets (40 laps); Cycle City Corp. INEX Legends (25 laps); EZ Auto of Newport News UCARs (Twin 20s); Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (Twin 15s); and, Enduros (50 laps).
Front gates swing open and afternoon practice gets under way at 2 p.m. The drivers meeting is slated for 4:15, followed by time trials at 4:30. Pre-race ceremonies begin at 6:55, while the first Champ Kart event leads off the evening's feature program shortly after 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Military personnel (active-duty or retired) and seniors (60+) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Family Packs, which include two adult and two kids tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
Advance tickets may be purchased in the Speedway office during normal business hours or through the track’s Web site — <www.langley-speedway.com>.

The U.S. Marine Corps 4th Supply Battalion will be accepting donations for the annual Toys For Tots campaign on Saturday. Fans and competitors are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to help brighten the holidays for needy children.

In the Grand Stock division, Ricky Derrick brings a 12-point lead over Mark Claar into Saturday's Twin 20s, 528-516. The "Twin" format seems to favor Claar, who has swept the last two doubleheaders en route to a four-race winning streak. Derrick has matched him nearly step for step, though, with four straight runner-up finishes. With the tiebreaker (number of race wins) tilting toward Claar, Derrick can clinch the crown with a pair of third-place outings this weekend.

Ryan Nester holds a six-point lead over Ritchie German in the current Super Street rundown, 486-480. Work commitments, however, will keep German away from the season-ender. Jamie Sample is third in the standings, 14 behind Nester. Nester and Sample are both winless so far in '11, but Nester does hold a 4-1 edge in second-place finishes (the second tiebreaker). Nester will wrap up the division title by finishing seventh or better on Saturday.

Brad Hancock enjoys a fairly comfortable 22-point advantage over Steve Keesee in the INEX Legends standings, 412-390. An 11th-place finish in this weekend's contest would be enough to deliver the 2011 championship to Hancock. If Hancock and Kessee both falter badly, third-place Spencer Saunders is only four points behind Keesee and poised to pounce.
• • •
In the UCAR title chase, Landon Florian holds a commanding 56-point lead over Chris Hildebrand, 492-436, as the division prepares for Twin 20s on Saturday. Florian should cruise to the championship, needing only a pair of 15th-place runs to seal the deal.

Could the Champ Karts go an entire season without a repeat winner? We'll find out on Saturday night when the division holds its 10th and 11th races. Chris O'Brien is the current points leader, 14 ahead of Daniel Millard, 358-344. A pair of third-place finishes would clinch the '11 championship for O'Brien.
• • •
After a nip-and-tuck, season-long battle with Mike Ganoe, Danny Harrell gained some breathing room in the Enduro standings last Saturday when mechanical problems forced Ganoe to the sidelines. Heading into Saturday's division finale, Harrell holds a 16-point lead over Bill Eaker, 244-228. Harrell can clinch the Enduro crown with a ninth-place outing this weekend. Third-place Alex Floroff trails Eaker by just two points and Ganoe is only two behind Floroff, in fourth.

Always one of the highlights on the Langley Speedway schedule, the Sixth Annual Day of Destruction is slated for Saturday, Oct. 29. The afternoon's spine-tingling lineup includes: a 50-lap Enduro race, two Demolition Derbies (one for domestic cars and one for imports), an Appliance race, a Reverse race, a Bag race, a Flag Pole race, a Train race, a Tug of War competition and a Burnout contest. The fun gets under way at 1 p.m.
Event information, including an entry form, is available at the track's Web site, <www.langley-speedway.com>.
